C36 Amg engine into R107 SL project

Yep, modified the sub-frame to make it fit. Can supply pics when I am back from the Austin GP

Great. Looking forward to it.

Apparently, you dropped the idea of modifying the oil sump? Did you ever check with one from 300-24v (M104)? It's different from at least E320 (M104).

I've got a 300TD 90% installed into a 107. I started out by doing this ^ to the subframe to get the sump in then discovered that the UK MOT test dis-allows modifications to any chassis or subframe member within 12" of a suspension mounting point. :wallbash:
Ended up with a new secondhand subframe and made my own sump to suit.

And you're right bigben. Lifting the car off the engine is deffo the way to go.

Now it starts to get really interesting!

Ben, to my knowledge there is (at least?) three different designs on M104 oil sumps. Which one do you have on your C36? And did you check if you can fit any of the other options?

Druk, that looks really nice. Unfortunately i do not have enough posts to be able to PM you . Is there a way you can PM me? Could have couple of questions...:)

I have not updated this thread for ages, or indeed looked at it (for shame). This reflects the lack of progress with the car.

However some progress has been made. I finally got the sub frame back together and attached to the car (after a few false starts and finally springing for a set of proper Klan style spring compressors).

For the first time is ages the car is back on its wheels and I consider the front end suspension refurbishment done.

Next job is to push the car into the drive, turn it round then get to work on the back suspension. I am confident it will be a much easier and quicker task.......

Ben

p.s. back to the subframe mods, I did not have to cut out as big a section as shown, just a minor mod and the plate welded in made it stronger that new.

Hi Ben, maybe a stupid question but is the C36 AMG engine in?

No the engine is not in yet. I might get time to do a trial fit on Sunday this weekend but this depends on what other more 'important' stuff I may be asked to do by the Mrs.

Thanks :)

It's a manual 5sp. ZF 717.450

I did not do any modifications to the chassis or sub-frame in this installation. You have an advantage since the engine carriers from your M103 (300SL) should fit bolt-on.

Left M104, right M114.

Looks like if my C36 engine had the sump from your M104 it would have fit without the subframe modification......

I have already offered the engine up to the subframe when it was out of the car and found the mounting points were the same as the M103 engine so that is a bonus.

Are you running the Merc ECU ?

There seems to be at least three (?) different oil sumps for this motor. I had some pics in one of my earlier posts.

Electrics are not there yet, but i'm using the original ecu from E320. Since the motor was originally with a manual gearbox and without an immobilizer there should not be too much of a hassle. If not the engine harness then...:)

Mine was with an auto box (which I will retain) and an immobiliser. I think I have kept all the relevant bits of loom so it should be OK. I also have a star computer which I think will pay for itself many times over.......

MBStar is the diagnostic system that dealers use. It is possible to source your own version if you are prepared to risk sending money to strange Chinamen!

I use it on my R230 SL for general diagnostics and have helped colleagues out, it is fairly simple to use and can tell you everything about your car.

Interesting, can you tell me a bit more what it is about?

I'm sure I'm correct in saying a Star machine would be a waste for a HFM M104 engine. If I were installing one of them (and that's my back-up plan if what I'm doing turns out to be rubbish) I would be looking at an aftermarket ECU and making a loom to suit.

Something like a MegaSquirt which is self-programmable and would squeeze that bit extra from the engine.

Welcome to Megasquirt UK

BTW, my gearbox is also the 717.450. :thumb:
