C36 Amg engine into R107 SL project

It was a later C36 so has the 5 speed electronic gearbox, just to keep it easy!
OK, ignore everything I said

So it has the 5-speed electronic... and you are forced to keep everything - all the interlinked ECUs

Did that C36 have ASR or ESP? If it hasd the former it'll need a feed from the rear ABS sensor, I'd have thought. If it had any form of ESP I would imagine there would have been a yaw sensor or something similar in the car

Does it have the EIS key system like a W210?

Big job!

I think it had ASR rather than ESP and took a feed from the rear driveshafts. I have kept the ECUs for the gearbox, ABS and engine as well as all the associated looms.

I am not sure what the EIS key system is, I thought it was called DAS so again has another ECU (inductive key reader) which is linked to the ECU.....

I can see a star diagnostic system purchase in my future......

It might also have a steering angle sensor on the steering wheel hub?

woah you are using a late engine?! Blimey that will be hard work. Hope you kept the keys, ignition, complete wiring for the car etc?

Yes I kept all of those bits. The only bits I am missing that I anticipate a problem with are the rear diff and associated sensors.

Edited to add of course if it won't work I could get a 4-speed box relatively easily.....

The later engines are fly-by-wire aren't they ? Mine is , but I wasn't confident enough to keep it that way , so we put in a cable instead . My accelerator has a horrible take up action , but after the first inch she is sweet .

I don't think it is, I suspect that may have come along when ASR became ESP but am prepared to be corrected.

What all the recent posts are telling me is I should buy another car with a 36 engine as my daily driver so I have a known good reference. Something I have been thinking about but I suspect the challenge of finding an E36 that has not dissolved or a C36 that has not been messed around by chavs is going to be harder that getting it all going!

Ben, good to see that you got some more work done. I bought M103 for my r107 as people suggested here. I put the engine in but need a longer drive shaft and engine supports to finish the install. Did you reuse the M103 engine supports (parts 1032230004 and 0104)? or do you have them for sale? If you have the front drive shaft I'd be interested in knowing it's length and whether you want to sell that also.

Hi, I have reused the engine mounts, they bolt straight onto the M104 mounting points, I also expect to reuse the driveshaft.

Did the engine fit apart from those issues ?

Whilst I am here can anyone tell me if buying an E320 with the 5 speed will give me a good 'reference' set of system electronics ? Seems to be a much nicer option than a C36

Ben

There is a little clearance issue on A/C piping in the back ofthe compressor. Other than that it looks good. I haven't installed the radiator yet.

Can you post or send me pictures of the engine supports? Note these sit on top of the rubber mounts. What is the length on the propeller shaft from the inside of the flange to the opposite end?

Seems I have not updated this thread for ages so here is a brief update. Essentially I have been cocking about with getting the engine to fit on the subframe, I plan to finally sort all that out over the Easter / Royal wedding break.

Rugby season is now over so expect a lot more progress!

Ben

A little more progress.

In the end I decided that the best option was to modify the sub-frame rather than the sump of the engine. After a good session with an angle grinder I now have the two mated together and all in alignment.

The next step is to remove a bit more sub frame to give some wiggle room for the engine then have re-enforcements added in the area I have weakened by cutting it.

This will be followed by a blasting and powder coating of the sub-frame and installation of the whole lot and engine into the car!!!!!

Ben

Wow can't believe it has been so long since I updated this thread.

So where is the project up to ?

Well progress has typically been slow, however since this post I have done the following:

- Modified the sub frame, had it reinforced, blasted and then I painted it
- Stripped down cleaned and painted all suspension parts
- Stripped down cleaned and painted all wheel carrier / hub parts.
- Sourced new shocks, engine mounts and all bushings / joints / bearings in the front suspension.

Next step is re-fit front sub frame and suspension to the car so it is mobile then have a bit of welding done around the engine bay and also tidy up a few rusty patches in there.

Following that installation of the engine, only about 13 months after I predicted earlier in this thread!

Ben

Bit more of an update.

Once again real life and the Rugby season have got in the way of much progress. I am now at the stage where every part of the front suspension and steering has been stripped and painted and every bushing / rod end / mount replaced.

Ready to go back on the car over the coming (no doubt) several months

Where abouts in cambridge are you from mate? Looks like a mental build! You have talent :)

I hope to have some talent by the end of the job, but have never done anything like it before. As a not so wise man once said 'how hard can it be?'

I am in Cambourne, how about you ?

Lol you are very brave then... I live in st Ives mate, there is a Mercedes specialist in swavesey called c&v motors, they scanned mine before and agreed to rescan at a later date again for free.

Yes I know C&V motors, figured they would have a star system

The sump gaskets don't help as the sump is 2cm longer on the M104, I suspect the extra length is at the back of the sump so won't effect sub frame clearance. I will know soon enough.
For those of you who are interested in the topic i would like to share my thoughts.

I do not think M104 engine will fit W107 without modification of either the sub-frame or the oilpan. If you check the pic here, you'll see why.

M110 sits as original in a W114, which has a more or less similar sub-frame as w107. You can fit a M103 in any W114/115 by modifying the sub-frame "in the middle" so to say (I can show pics about this if anybody is interested). With same modification you cannot fit M104 (see pic).

Which leaves us with the oilpan. This is exactly what I am doing with my project of fitting a M104 E320 to W114 Coupe.
