I seem to remember reading that the throttle (around94-96cars at least) had a problem with being 'heavy' at the beginning of it's stroke. This is my contemporary experience of the new car and current experience of an old one.
Do C36 owners of this vintage share this opinion? Has the problem ever been addressed, or dose one just acquire the appropriate delicacy from a standing start?

marec, you really need to compare it against anopther c36, it might be something like your MAS going... this normally makes the car sluggish. also try a gearbox reset, and see if it makes a difference, as it learns your driving style.

I have the 1996 C36. Yes, the throttle is somewhat heavy at the beginning of the stroke...but I would characterize that as being normal rather than as a "problem". The engine has bags of torque and this feature helps to prevent loss of traction on wet roads.

Anyway, if I give it the boot, it takes off like a scaled cat! This pops the eyes and drops the jaws of non-C36 owners, I can assure you!

Oh, Yes, there's no shortage of performance. I think it's about the same as my jaguar (and the turning circle is much better!!). It's just the initial push on the throttle required to set the car in motion. It seems to be counter to the general air of iron fist in silk glove. I have read a number of reviews of the car from the mid nineties which mention it. I wondered if there had been a mod. developed to ameliorate the issue.
I'll have to find what a sprint booster is...

Buy a Sprint Booster.

I read a bit of the thread on 'Sprint Boosters' and I don't think this is the solution. The car has no shortage of performance and acceleration can be exhilarating. The noise really contributes to this. There is appropriate throttle response, I feel, my problem is only with the 'shove' required at the start of the throttle travel. Something like the feeling of going over a cam.

Is the gearbox (4 speed) adaptive? I didn't know that...

A sprint booster basically makes your throttle more responsive/sensitive, however you want to understand it.

I've driven mercs with and without it, and the ones which have it, are very eager to jump when touched.Ii quite enjoyed it, and if it wasn't for mine being manual i would've bought one myself.
