C43 Oil usage

Funny that - WDM Merc were quoting IRO £400 to change the steering rack - I could see underneath that the damper was leaking - and interestingly I have a MB main dealer receipt for a new damper in Oct 07, surprised it has failed again so quickly. I think I will have that part changed and see what difference it makes..

Unless they mean steering idler?
Item no 8, cant see it being £400 though maybe the box itself.

Thanks for the diagram. Basically there is a load of play, noticable around the straight-ahead and particularly obvious when the steering lock is on and the car is parked. When driving there is noticeable slack in the steering, the damper was damp with oil so I guess is not up to scratch; probably a good idea to change it first as it's relatively cheap. Will still need to get a garage to do it as I've not got any axle stands or space to jack the car up.
