It was a quick joke and a nod to your comment. It didn't need the patronising "Yes, very clever".
Anyway, it depends on the technology used. Radar only operates a few hundred meters. At motorway speed you're looking at that distance and beyond anyway, as you'll be there in a couple of seconds.
Laser guns are much less used but do have much longer range of about a mile.
Also the last thing you said about local communities being given speed guns to "generate revenue" isn't correct, as you can't be prosecuted, only get a warning letter.

They are taught to work in pairs, with one volunteer operating the gun and another noting down the offending vehicle’s details, including... its speed, registration number, make, model and colour. This information is passed to police, who trace the driver and issue a warning letter.
