C63 Cracked Rear Wheel

When I bought mine from sytner bristol they found that one had a crack in and replaced the wheel before I picked it up, they must be aware of the issue as they said they should always check for cracks now on this type of wheel. Anyways great result!

All sorted.

Ive had two new rear wheels fitted and they've also thrown in two new tyres. The front wheels have been inspected and they say they can't find any cracks and therefore, should they crack I'm on my own which I guess is fair enough. I imagine I'd have to whack them pretty hard anyway so, business as usual regarding keeping the tyres properly inflated.

Happy days.

Slightly unfair, as it also comes down to luck - or the lack of it.

My wife's SLK (18-inch wheels) suffered a wrecked tyre and buckled rim as the result of hitting a massive pothole on a main A-road in the wet at night. While you could say it was "user error", would you try to avoid every puddle ahead just in case? Oh, and for the avoidance of doubt, the tyre pressure was fine.

Still "user error"..... never let a woman drive your car......

You say "her's" but all cars belong to the man ;)

I to, have now fallen foul of the cracked AMG alloy saga. Having removed the 19" OEM alloys for a refub, the first rear rim with tyre removed, has revealed a nasty 25mm crack running from the inner lip of the rim. Unsurprisingly I'm not best pleased.
The number of reported cases on this forum alone, would suggest there is a fundamental fault with these alloy rims...

The fault is a heavy car with stiff suspension and rubber band tyres.

BMW and other marques have had similar issues. We have terrible road surfaces nowadays and plenty of pot holes.

Sorry to hear this as its not a nice feeling, especially when one wheel will run you £600.

I agree with Dieselman, it's defintely part of the issue but you are also correct that this is a more mordern issue.

Does anyone know who makes the wheels? AMG themselves? I would guess it's outsourced to BBS, Ronal or the like where they already have equipment to provide a cheap wheel cast and start a cost effective (for MB) production run.
I'm sure costs have been negotiated down, and perhaps to achieve a low unit cost, material quality has suffered; unlike a true £2.5-3k of genuine split rims from these types of companies.
