C63 Estate Ordered!

28mpg Scumbag?? Blimey - are the estates more economical than the saloons?!?!! ;)

Seriously though, I have tried, I really have. Doing a constant 70-75mph for about 100 miles I could not better 24mpg and on a long run with more normal cruising speeds (you know...90+ ;)) it averages about 20-21mpg. But going to and from work which is predominantly town driving, cold engine etc... I'm lucky to see 16mpg!

I'm not complaining - I knew what I was buying and having owned a BMW M6 I know all about running costs but, when faced with £400+ to tax, an average 18mpg and rear tyres every 5k miles...a C63 could never be regarded as anything but expensive to run!

I doubt it, estates are about 100 or so KG heavier. couple of things tho.

firstly the troll mobile arrive in the UK with about 550miles on it, so it was still under the runnning in instructions and the weather was pretty much bad everywhere which meant driving sensibly, so no heavy throttle.

I did a few resets on the start trip calculator at various speeds and then ran until I needed a stop which generated a few different results due to the condition. if you do it from cold and also have to drive to the motorway, you have the previous average holding your instant average back as it were.

I saw +30 between the end of the toll road M6 and some services on the M5 which was where the traffic was moving at a decent enough pace to not get in my way, it was averageing 59 when I got above 30 with it.

after those services I just got on with making my way to my end destination and it averaged 28.

if you use Cruise control, when a slight incline arrives it drops to 6th. best to change it to M to hold the gear.

problem is in M it drops out of 7th around 53ish and does not want to go back into it till about 56ish, whereas in C it keeps 7th till about 46 and can be encouraged to upshift to it around 48 or so, vital in roadworks.

you do need to conecentrate to get best mpg.

the other main thing I noticed, the engine is very tight although I sense it is starting to loosen up at 2100 miles it seems to have just gone over. The C63's at brooklands were very much more sensitive to throttle input. So I guess if you have pressed on a while, the car is adapting and probably more inclined to feed some fuel in, whereas the gentle approach my had been given may mean it was not expecting the heavy foot for a while.

....and rear tyres every 5k miles...a C63 could never be regarded as anything but expensive to run!

Is everyone really going through rears in 5k miles? I thought the RS was rough with just 6k out of a set of fronts.....

Most probably. I drive it in the same way as I drove my M3 and M6...both of those got 9-10k from the rears when they had Michelin PS2's.

In addition, the M3 came from the factory with Michelin Pilot Sport Cups which only have 5mm tread when new - even those got 7k miles before needing to be changed. I also haven't even tracked the C63 yet - both the BMW's had a least 1 track session and one Nurburgring trip on their tyres.

The general consensus on the American C63 forum (Mercedes Benz C Class E Class AMG News: Review, Preview. Owners, Repair, Wheels - MBWorld.org) is that 4-5k is normal.

Are they wearing just on the inside due to massive neg camber? Or are they a special compound for the C63? RS4 was nowhere near that bad.

i was pleasantly suprised at how consistant it was at a steady between 65-80 ish. for about 45miles it was doing 28mpg at an average of 69mph.

Scumbag - are you driving your car with the engine off? ;)

After your feedback, I thought I've got to give this a go! I filled the tank, reset the counter and drove for about 20 miles doing constant speeds between 50-60mph. I could not get the trip to show anything higher than 22.7mpg!

You must have a hole in the floor to run the car along Flinstones style to get 28mpg lol!

The Yokohama's (and Conti's I believe) are an MB fitment but the compound is the same as their regular tyres.

The tyres did wear more on the inside but not drastically more - at 5k miles the whole tyre was illegal with the inner edge just starting to wear into the inner structure of the tyre  I'm actually ashamed of myself for not checking before but the last time I checked the car had done 2.5k miles and they seemed fine - I didn't expect them to wear so quickly!

!

Stop pressing the throttle and just rest your foot on it.

are your tyres at the right pressure too? still, you have to drive properly and it is boring to be honest.....if you try to beat your old MPG it becomes a bit of a challenge.

here is your challenge then.

That's pretty impressive Scumbag!

But I can't believe the tyre wear rate! That is phenominal! At the present rate, that'll be new tyres every other month!! Ouch. Time to look at bulk buying!

What are people paying for a set of rears?

Well, knock me down with a BMW!

That is sensational Scumbag - I will certainly take on the challenge but I think I'm on a losing number!

Tyres...well, if they are in supply (as they currently are) I managed to get a pair from Elite Direct for £205 each. However, I have had the car just 5 months and in that time experienced TWO punctures (not repairable). On both those occasions, there was virtually no UK stocks of the tyres and I could only get them from a main dealer. This means I paid £300 (front) and £370 (rear)

The learning from this is A) Don't get a puncture, just don't! and B) when you are coming up for needing new tyres shop around early for them incase you have to wait for 'cheaper' stocks to arrive!

Note - this is only trying to get the Yokohama's - it may be different with the Conti's.

I like playing the MPG game but it only works with big petrol engined stuff, the Audi diesels and stuff seem to return the same MPG regardless of how you drive them.

Now have build date: 17th March

Should be able to collect before the end of the month :D

Hi Jack

Did your build date get moved forward as well. I was called this week and mine has got pushed forward a whole month - build date now in February - collection March probably :bannana:

5k miles for your rear tyres??? What do you doing to them? Surely at least 10k?

We will just be missing eachother. Cannot wait!!

Anyone know why our dates have been able to be moved forward?

Probably due to cancellations from people scared of going through rear tyres like hot dinners....:D

True enough but i only drive my car about 8k miles a year so should be ok

I just cannot wait now:rock:
