Theres a sticker under the bonnet that states Mobil1

AMG do not recommend anything else.....if you are unsure on how to do this Paggzy take it in to your dealer. tbh mate why haven't you been checking the levels. They always use more oil from new and you should be checking that. I had mine topped up when she went in for the LSD oil change.

You shouldnt wait for the oil light to come up fella!

Just got the message on the dash check oil levels
Checked the dip it's just below the low so gonna top it up
Was recommend mobi 1 o/40

That correct? How much do you put in

As much as it takes it upto the high dipstick mark.... You should have been given a litre in a pouch in the back of your car which tells you exactly the oil to get and should be enough to take you over the minimum mark, it will probably take all that and a bit more.

Shouldn't you fill to just below the high mark when the engine is cold to allow for block/head expansion to reduce the available volume and hence increase the oil level ?

ill check the car tomorrow but if not im off to halfords

so is mobil 1 0/40 the one was gonna get the 1L and put 3/4 in then check the dipstick to see where i am . as LTD said i was gonna put below the maximum to allow for expansion

The maximum level takes the expansion into account,.... The point is hes let the oil get down to a dangerous level for a high performance car. You have to check the oil levels on a brand new car every couple of weeks as the oil burns a lot quicker with new engine part in a new engine.

Benjy, that's not what the MB dealer told me when he under-filled my car at the last A Service... I'd go with LTD on this one.

I top mine up regularly
i was told the c63 could use a litre every 1700 miles
mine was using about a litre every 2500 miles
>>update>> it is now using a litre every 3500 miles
i could bore you with the exact figures if you wish as i record it
i top up when the dashboard message comes up it says " top up when you next refuel" so i assume its not urgent or at a dangerous level . i do this because i do not want to risk overfilling the oil as i fear this will do damage

should i not be using this message as a top up prompt? - i put 1 litre in with the knowledge it wont overfill

however for the trackday april 29th i want to fill it to max , dipsticks are a bit approxiamate, in my opinion, how do i do it without overfilling?

i would like to know the max top up when the message comes up without overfilling...1.5 litres? ..or more

appreciate any thoughts gents

Paggzy get a 5l can 1l wont last long

You need MB229.5 spec oil. I too wait for the 'check oil and next refuel' message because the dipstick seems so erratic.

I found somewhere on a US website the difference between min and max, but it was in 'quarts' and equated to around 1.5Litres.

Costco is the way forward for Mobil1, by far the cheapest.

I have probably put around 4Litres in over the last 7000miles....almost as expensive as fuel!!

Simon

i was told 1.5 litres between min and max too
and ive used 3.5litres( probably nearer to 4 litres ) in 12000 miles
I guess with the ladders on the roof theres probably a little more effort needed from the v8 hence your slightly higher consumption:D

It's not really a case of the engine expanding and reducing volume, more that as the engine reaches operating temperature the oil heats up and expands :)

To be honest, no real harm will be done by letting the oil light come on, I am pretty sure that Mercedes have considered a pretty safe margin when they worked out the volume of oil remaining for when the light comes on.

Not recommending it, but no need to worry IMHO - just top it back up to the correct level :thumb:

I think people need to be sensible here.

Check the oil level every week or 2 weeks but the MB system has an advisory note stating a top up is wise. It is not a 'low level' warning buzzer as such so just add the litre as it states.

Personally, I check mine once a week but I don't drive my c63 everyday.

just topped it up 1l of mobil 1 ill keep an eye evey couple of weeks

thanks again lads...

I am not so sure on mine, I get many 'smokey startups' and I have seen an oily patch on the inside of the undertray from inside the engien bay.

I am keeping my eyes open.

the subject of smoking exhausts cropped up a few weeks ago i hadnt noticed it but have been looking out since then and yes i do get the occassional puff of smoke

will check the undertray also

So I popped 0.75 l in when the message caem up, but sure one litre would have been fine. Any oil that meets the MB spec is okay, but most use Mobile1.

Just going by personal experience lads but u do as u feel.

Mobil1 0-40 is the recommended one. Dealer tried to sell me the wrong one would you believe! I have used a 5L container and the car has only done 8000 miles. I tend to check the oil first thing on a morning when the engine is stone cold, and top up so the level is between the top 2 dots.
