Any ideas on this chaps;
Dropped my car in with russell at reflectology in sheffield for a detail, he rang me this morning to say when he jacked the back of the car up to take the rear wheels off he noticed there was significant movement in both rear wheels around 1-2in and when he moved them there was a metal to metal knocking noise which i could hear over the phone :( i called mercedes benz exeter from where i purchased the car about 1 month ago the car is a 62 plate with 5300 miles on the clock to see what their thoughts were he said there should be no movement in the rear wheels and from what i described it actually sounds alarming, he advised me not to drive the car and called mercedes breakdown, they recovered the car and have taken it to mercedes benz of sheffield where they have yet to take a look at it but one chap in service said there should be a bit of movement in the rear wheels.
Anyone else had this or heard of a similar scenario?

Hi Jas, i havent heard of there being so much movement in the rear wheels, i would of imagined that there may be a little play but not so much that you can hear is over the phone, that doesnt sound right!

I remember having a brand new slk280 With play in both rear wheel bearings it had done 7 miles, it was having its pre delivery inspection when I noticed it.

If there is any sort of movement in the wheels it should be easy to pinpoint.

Sounds extremely dodgy. Maybe a silly Q. Have tyres been replaced recently on rear. Maube bolts aren't tight

Not sure about tyres but the rears are contis and the fronts yokos. Haven't heard anything back from the dealer yet i am finding them extremely frustrating to deal with i can never get through to anyone and my calls are never returned!

Phone up and ask to speak to the Dealer Principal. If they ask who you are, tell them you're handling his wife's divorce. I guarantee you'll get to speak with to him ;)

I've just called mercedes breakdown to ask them to liase with these people on my behalf as yet again after numerous phone calls from me i have spoken to no one they have had my car since 3pm thursday its so frustrating!
Mercedes breakdown said they would take the car to another dealer if i am unhappy with their service but where do i take it, ive started another topic asking for dealer recommendations in the yorkshire region

Contis on the rear means the original Yokos rears haven been replaced around 5000 miles. Sounds like it's been driven well before you bought it then ;)

Thats what they're made for mate :thumb:

This just sounds all wrong to be honest - 1-2 inch play, seriously! Should be virtually nil play.

Yea I would have though that you would 100% notice 1-2inch of play when you drove it!!

I'll ask the stupid question.

Do you mean the wheels rock on the hub or the hub rocks on the wheel bearing - in a north/south manner - top to bottom/side to side if you like?

Or do you mean the wheels have play in a rotational manner?

Yes north/south movement, one side rocked either way about an inch and at each point there is a metal to metal knocking noise the other side was worse he said it was between 1-2in play with the same metal to metal knocking noise

I'm no mechanic but my guess would be wheel bearing, suspension joints or even a shocker but why both sides

Surely either side is mostly independent from each other apart from the anti roll bar

On the positive side, you're protected by the 12 month Tier One warranty.

In the past I've involved MB Customer Services (via a telephone conversation) and they will contact the dealer, keeping the issue in the MB corporate domain.

A civil but firm approach helps in the first instance.

Thanks to everyone for your input. I'm glad to say the car is fine, all suspension components checked and the car was given the all clear. It's transpired the movement in the wheels was indeed rotational, the car was in park with the handbrake off hence the free play between the clutch, diff and park pawl etc
