The following is from pistonheads, the guy lives in kent

Well I have owned my lovely C63 coupe PP +++ for a couple of months now, and last night some thieving scum broke into our house and took the keys and then stole the car.

It had a tracker on it (which I did not know about) and so I called tracker this morning and £600 later they activated the system and got a reply from the car. It was not a GPS tracker so we had to wait for it to drive near a tower or a suitable equipped police car.

Fair play to the police. There was a forensic van here, a police car, a plain clothes police car, a plain pursuit GSXR1000 and two high speed police pursuit cars here this morning!

At about 10 the police called me to say that the car had triggered in Biggen Hilland that the Met were outting up a dedicated police tracker helicopter.
An hour ago I got a call to say that my car has been secured and there is no damage!

We all have a maon and groan about the police, but I have to say WELL DONE! Absolutely on the game.

So be warned - SLEEP with your keys, do NOT leave them in your house.

The police say that this is organised crime and the thieves targeted the car for sale abroad. Another £75k AMG was also stolen in the area last night.......

Man oh man, it has been an emotional roller coaster today.

I should get my car back in the next day or two - they are doing a full forensic investigation.

With any luck this will lead to the recovery of the other AMG stolen last night in the area that did not have any tracker fitted.

Good job Plod. Hopefully they have apprehended someone and they get a bit more than 50 hours community service.

Wow lucky you got it back!! Well done to the Police for acting in this way. Normally its just a quick visit and back to the donut shop.

Interesting stuff.

The perps broke in and nicked the keys from the house for a car worth approx 60,000 notes. If caught, what will they get? Community service?

If the perps had broken in and nicked 60,000 notes in cash, would they get a heavier sentance?

Just out of curiosity.... Was your car at any time (by the Police i presume) officially recorded as stolen?.... And now is it classified as stolen-recovered?

No, if you had £60k in cash, they would still get a slap on the wrist & you would get a visit from HMRC:rolleyes:

It only gets classed as Stolen Recovered if the insurance company write it off.

As in this case the recovery was before any insurance company payout, it won't get recorded.

Why did the owner call tracker if he didn't know the car had one fitted?

Sleeping with your car keys is the worse advice possible, there's no way that I would risk mine and my families safety for a lump of metal.

Rather the car goes than me...

Why did the Police turn up mob handed?

I would expect a CSO and regular officer, but traffic car, unmarked car, unmarked traffic bike.

Did nobody tell them the car wasn't there?

I'd have a garage ...

Possibly had a look through his paperwork and found it was fitted? Maybe he bought an ex demo or a cancelled order etc.

Definitely leave the keys downstairs, let the car get nicked if it saves you from harm!

Well done to the plod. I like the fact that they pulled out high speed pursuit cars and a super bike!

Spot on fella. Keys should be left in a place where they are easily accessible.

No, I wouldn't recommend sleeping with keys - it's not worth it.

If they have to come and find the key, then unless you are ready and willing to deal with the situation and have the ultimate deterrent in mind (Father who killed burglar with meat cleaver was 'justified' coroner rules | Mail Online), let them get on with it as they aren't going to turn around and run away just because you have them.

Keys should be safe wherever they are in your house. The fact they aren't says more about the lack of 'justice' system in this country than anything else.

If he didn't have a tracker or the vehicle wasn't a £60k + car I wonder whether the police would have even bothered.

I remember when my car got stolen in the 90's and they found it stripped and thought I would thank them but on the whole I do not like the police they have never come to my aid ever but quite the contrary.

A friend of mine told me recently that his insurance is now cheaper if he parks on the road than if he parks in his driveway because of the increase in this type of theft.

I'm certainly glad that you got your car back. At least Merc don't seem to be suffering from the number of incidence of aggravated stealing that affect Audi RS models or the stealing without keys incidents that you hear about of Audi and BMW.
