Can the Chrome keys be recoded?

Hi all

I have just bought a new style chrome key off ebay and have just been informed by mercedes that they cannot be recoded to my vehicle. Only ML and Vito vans can, and that they are coded by Mercedes for life when ordered or manufactured.

Is this correct or are they being obstinate? I know most other manufacturers e.g. Honda's keys can be recoded.

My understanding too I'm afraid.

I only know from reading on here and other forums, I've no personal experience on the subject.

What ba$%$s to do that though. Why do they not enable recoding is this a cynical money issue?

It is a money issue. The owner's money. If the dealer was able to code the key, there would be room for criminals making use of it, one way or the other.

I wouldnt hang it from the mirror.
You might get some idiot breaking in thinking it is the key for the car.
