W210 E320 CDI Estate (2001)
Hi all

I heard a whirring type noise coming form under the bonnet a few days ago, then it seemed to go away.

Last night my power steering failed and i got dash warning battery/alternator fault.

I popped the bonnet and can immediatley see a belt of some sort has snapped.

Can anyone tell me what this is and if so how much it will likely cost to have replaced, thanks in advance.

Car is a W210, E320 on an X plate.

That's your main fan belt...everything will eventually stop and the car will over heat.

if you're having bad luck your crankshaft harmonic balancer got screwed!?
rubber gets heat damage and cracks, HB gets wobbly.
your fanbelt will come off the HB tension.

if you're having bad luck, fanbelt could grind your oilfilter housing from beneath or grind the front of the engine plate?
happens to all m112/m113 engines.
HB was redesigned several times and was a recall in the US not in europe

Don't start your car up at anytime until you have replaced your belt.

You could replace it yourself... if you are a DIY mechanic... or just call one of those mobile mechanics.

thanks sincerely guys. very much appreciated

I'll start hunting for a mechanic in Glasgow.

Check all pulleys for play too. It maybe a worn one that has thrown the belt off.

Bad news I'm afraid, the mechanic reckons the alternator pulley has actually come off and rubber has burnt on to a few of the other parts, he thinks I should replace them all.

I started looking on eBay for parts but to be honest quickly realised that I wasn't sure if I had a w210 or an s210. C?an anyone help me out please, it's a 2001 e320 diesel estate so is this the w210 or s210

Also can I buy these parts in a kit, if so where from?

Thank you.

You have an E320cdi, the w210 is the saloon the s210 is the estate...the front end remains the same.:D

Then you should also check all pulleys, and perhaps get a new tensioner.

The noise was probably the failing altenator pulley.
Good advice to check all pulleys, particularly the tensioner pulley.

I have no idea what other parts your mechanic suggests needs replacement but inspection of all damaged parts should guide you.
