Car cost in 1988

yep i got a load of 80's brochures (including AMG & Lorinser) from Bazza and I havent had so much fun on the toilet since i was a teenager.

:D

Benefit of having his and hers bathrooms is that she fills hers with makeup and bottles of perfume, and I fill mine with a small library of Autocar magazines. :D

I kept everyone between 1994 and 2000, but now I have to be more selective. I only keep the ones with road tests I'm particularly interested in. I love looking back at older ones though.

The things that really stand out are the sophistication of adverts, quality of photography, and the dubious photoshops of secret forthcoming models. Even just five years ago the artists impressions were a world apart from what we see now.

well a 190E was 15K, so in todays money about 30K... not too far off a C180?

That's for the basic model. Add on the extras you'd expect & the price rockets up a few G's more. In '91 15 hole alloys were an extra £921, auto gearbox £1027, leccy windows £822, leather £1656, AC £2270!

My 560SEL (soon to be for sale) with extra goodies such as ASR. SRS, CC, Hydropneumatic level control, heated electric memory ortho seats etc, etc cost about £70K out the door!

A nice house in 1989 I'd say.

the most expensive were things like airbags & fridges..

That's for a 1991 190E 2.0 BTW. Taken from the MB Price List October 1991.

The only options on the SEL were: Airbag, Floor Mats, Curtains, Fire Sprayer, Heated Seats, Self Levelling, Ortho Seat backs, fridge, blind, Alarm, Towbar...

All else was standard..

There was also the option of split rear seats for the SEL, electrical and heated and orthopaedic !!!!

Fridge option was nice - i just got an original and new one yesterday ! NLA and ultra rare option. Also got the complete wooden rear console, the one that has wood all the way to the top !

The other console was the wooden roll top one for the SEC....shown here in my Carat SE.

In 1988, Autocar tested a 300E 4-Matic, with (among other things) an optional-extra Becker radio cassette player.

Nine hundred and fifty five pounds

SEC maybe rather than SEL?

i think YOU have also been spending too long on the toilet with these brochures.. there arent many items in them that you dont have!

I just managed to source a roller top cover for the front of my SEC... i know not as rare but im happy!

i was listing the options from SEL...

Split & independently controlled rear seats was an option for the SEC too..

you sure ?

I have never seen electric / heated seats on the rear of an SEC anywhere...yes, my 560 SEC has them but it was a retro fit purely for 'wow' purposes....not practical to have electrical seats as there's no flipping legroom

Oh sorry i read it wrong... it says split independent electric adustable seats from SEC available in SEL...

I bought my first house (flat) in 1991 for £41500

I'm yet to buy a car that cost as much as the flat. I wonder how long it will take until I do?

Some of you will have bought houses many more years ago than I and will have already reached the 1st house = current car price situation. How long did it take?

My first house was £60k, in 1990.

Went on themarket in 1991, sold it in 1993 for £48.5k :(

Much like owning a car, really.
