Car depreciation rates worsening

I think in Singapore any car over 10 years old has to be scrapped due to some strange laws on pollution... Bad for Singapore used car values, good for the surrounding countries..

Crikey,
The depreciation must be horrendous as I believe there are significant tax weighting on new largish cars?

We all cry about how hard done by we are yet we say this without any expert knowledge. all we tend to hear is, "Look how much cheaper cars are in America!" whinge, whinge, but do we say look how much cheaper a car is in Singapore??  I have just checked the basic price of an E-class 280CDI estate with NO OPTIONS and before taxes:

81,973.1 GBP or $230,888 Singapore dollars. I dread to think of how much this car would cost in Norway, but I bet it aint cheap :)
Ade has just stated that a car in Singapore has a 10year life span.... Ouch! Oh well let's all carry on saying how badly we are being treated :D

Regards
John

I agree John, and I beleive that many of the people whining about the budget will have forgotten all about it in a couple of weeks' time, but for the sake of balance, I would say that poor treatment isn't relative.

In other words, it is possible for us (or anyone else) to have a raw deal irrespective of the way others are treated. :)

It is the moving of the goalposts retrospectively that gets me. I can live with the VED changes if they are brought in for future purchasing decisions, not to penalise past ones with imperfect information.

It is this moving of the goalposts that will also have a big impact on second hand car values.

GRRRRRR:mad:

Totally agree and if we get a raw deal we should take it on the chin and fight our own corner. I am not bothered whether a car is cheaper in country 'x' compared to country 'y' my only concern is what is happening in my country. We are treated like idiots by people that drive around in HUGE gas guzzlers that get paid far more than most folks and have perks that are unbelievable. To make matters worse, we have voted these hypocrites into office, yet more brain dead people vote for 'Big Brother' than what vote for our politicians. I will never listen to folks that complain, if they do not vote and yes we have a problem, but apart from shooting all the old, infirm, and disabled, what is the answer?

John for the first time in my life I now feel like I need to do something, apart from voting which I will always do.

I am just a normal hard working guy with a family, whose disposable income is gradually eroding away year after year. I drive a seven year old car, yes its a Merc (thats why I am on here), and my VED will double overnight in 2009 to band M. We also have a Honda which will also have its road tax nearly double. That is an extra £500 more or less on road tax a year.

Along with all the other rising taxes, any salary rise I get every year is dwarfed.

So what to do, well as a start I signed the anti VED rise petition on the PM's website. I know some think that it is pointless, well I disagree, enough people signing it will get it on the National news, and it will be listened to. It may be ignored, but the people cannot be ignored forever.

Secondly I wrote to my MP for the first time.

At worst it has made me feel better to vent, at best it might be a small step for the working man standing up for himself, and saying to the powers that be, that the working people do not have limitless cash and patience, and that they need to find ways to deliver more for less.

If we all start to make small steps to stand up for ourselves, then eventually they will become a stampede. If we do nothing through apathy, then we will continue to be taken for granted.

I was in a similar situation a couple of years ago, rising costs, non-existent salary increases. I took a risk and decided to go contracting and I have to say it's worked out OK so far. However, with recent changes to the tax regime and huge increases in bills I'm rapidly sliding back to where I was before. I suspect by the end of the year I will be faced with another big decision.
On the plus side contracting has enabled me to buy (and almost pay off) a fantastic '53 plate E320 Estate (so many nice toys:bannana:) and I will be doing everything in my power (short of robbing the kids of nappies) to hang onto it.

There's some rubbish in this thread.

That is *not* a before tax price.

Here's a 1989 car for sale in Singapore:

Could you please show me the price of a brand new E-class 280CDI estate from Singapore. I don't mind being called a liar but would prefer proof. the price I published is NOT the full on the road price.

As my old sergeant said, "Put up or.........."

John

For me (and the approach I'm going to take buying my wife's Freelander 2) it's about:

Dont do it....

I've just spent 3 months agonising over this exact decision. The upshot of a whole load of research is that the freelander is a truly awful car with many problems indeed, especially the Rover engined 1.8's but including the TD4's (hence the cheap prices).

Get a honda CR-V instead.

You didn't say it was the NOT the full on the road price

You said:

The main tax is a huge import duty and that is included in the stated price (hence it's so high).
There's also COE - Certificate of Entitlement - which the MB website says is included - and the dealer doesn't know how much that will be by the way, they have to bid for a COE when the sale is made!

All the green labelling on the various tax rises relating to cars is a joke as we all know, keeping an older car running for longer is a very valid way of being green. I seem to remember some time ago that for the average car one third of its lifetime carbon footprint was down to its production leaving two thirds for its entire life in your hands and then finally its disposal.

I work at a brand new state of the art research facility at a University in which there is a server room. This server room has no ventilation of any kind and relies on AirCon for cooling. What I find staggering (and frankly almost bordering on criminal) is that we have 40kW of heat being generated which requires 40kW of cooling - total 80kW. There is no heat transfer of any kind to the rest of the building and so this is just largely wasted energy. No wonder we find it so hard to buy into this unilateral energy consumption reduction  .

I deliberately said before taxes because I have no idea what taxes if any will be put onto the final advertised price. In my experience a new car selling price bears no relation to the price I pay to get that vehicle onto the highway.

If my post is RUBBISH then clarify where the rubbish is?

What do you claim a NEW 280CDI estate sells for that is so different from the figures I have posted?

John

It sells for the figure you quoted - yet you said it didn't!

Who cares anyway? The only relevance pricing eleswhere in the world has is at the base price before all taxes level, and we know the UK is one of the most expensive places in the world for pre-tax car prices.

I care.

Especially when told I'm talking rubbish.

Some folks feel we are being ripped off over the prices we pay for new cars. I picked a country to highlight how we might be more fortunate than we think. I deliberately tried to be tactful and stated this was before taxes and by this I meant there might be more money to pay out before getting the car on the road. You have said this is rubbish. That is your right and we all have our opinions, I merely want to know what is rubbish as that is a strong word to use. By all means disagree but please let us treat each other with some degree of respect.

You stated that the base price, before taxes, of the E280 Estate in Singapore is 81,973.1 GBP which is rubbish.

With the global view that the internet gives on pricing, how would Mercedes get away with charging a pre-tax £82K on a car whose base price is around £30K?

Now, its after tax, etc price could be absolutely anything - that's a decision for the local administration.
