any ideas?

It's telling you to scratch that itch ;)

Mine always sounds like a 5 litre

Crack in the manifold that once the engine is up to temperature seals itself as the metal expands ?

Just a guess mind.

Hi bhav

Welcome to the 4 cylinder Merc engine.

Unless there are signs of engine distress, the obvious
things like blowing exhaust, using oil, water or heavy
fuel consumpsion, warning on the dash etc etc then this
is possibly a normal situation.

Mine is the same.

The computers enrichen like an auto choke, when cold, gearbox on mine
tends to hold lower gears for longer until there is a touch of warmth in the
engine... then all seems normal.

Unless someone more enlightened on here knows better I think it is
a foible of what is acknowlegded to be a pretty tough but rough 4
cyl.

Hi,
As Howard has suggested, I would suspect the manifold, as these are quite common point of failure, they can be welded though, but as their cast this can be problematic.
New one is in the region of £375-400.

Those do sound strange when cold, its completely normal..something to do with a flap in the manifold..

It shouldnt be down on power though.

It could be the split breather pipe on the intake. There is load of info about it on here.

Quite possible, although not a cracked manifold i had two snapped manifold bolts on my 124 which when cold had some blowing and you could tell it was a bit rough when driving off. When warmed up however it sort of sealed itself 'tighter'.

Hi guys finally managed to take off manifold today as the winter mornings is making the sound louder. So managed to take off manifold, clean it up and could not see any visible damage.

I did however change the gasket as it was open. I hadn't started the car this morning and it was quite cold. After the gasket change I started the car and no sound. The real test will be tomorrow morning though.

I have attached an image of the old gasket which spent seem to have any visible damage, maybe the bolts just needed tightening. I will post the update tomorrow.

ill bet the same noise will be there! its normal... sometimes puts customers off buying when they come look at our cars and we start them from cold...
the noise is exacerbated in our showroom!
