Carbon Fibre Trim Options

I actually like the irregularities much better, than the strictly uniformed pattern of the carbon wrap - it looks much more realistic, in my opinion.

Ordered a few small parts, so that I don't have to mess my car up ... yet

Stewart showed me a very nice pattern in matt finish - I'm going for that, I think.

Thanks again kasper! :thumb:

How can it be 'realistic' if it's an image? If uniformed pattern is how the real fabric goes, then it must be as realistic as it gets? ;)

yes this was the carbon design I picked lots of different carbon designs available colours are by choice

I understand that. My comment was about the wavy pattern of CF lines. Personally, if I wanted it dipped, I'd settle on something that doesn't have linear pattern. :thumb:

PS: I like the red/black combination. No questions here. It's just that CF version doesn't look too convincing.

Do you not able to comprehend the difference between "real" and "realistic"?

Only an image (or a copy of similar nature) can be realistic. Or not.

The real thing can't be realistic, as it's real.

If uniformed pattern is how the real fabric goes

It is not. That's the whole point.

Looks uniform to me.

Well, I'm getting ready to have a few interior trim bits done, and had to remove the a/c controls surround and the cup holder from my car today (all other parts are duplicates, mostly new).

Horrified by the prospect of driving around with two gaping holes for two weeks, I cut a temporary replacements out of (don't laugh) ... cardboard

Certainly not a perfect fit (look at the left side :wallbash:), but better than nothing I guess:

A blanking plate in place of the cup holder:

A trim to accommodate the parking and security controls and the a/c switch pack:

Now that's a fully recyclable mod, if I ever seen one :bannana:

Wow top job! That honesty looks amazing in itself, can't wait to see the actual dipped parts :)

Thanks, it will do for the time being, can't wait to get the bits back - posting all the parts off tomorrow. Most will be matt carbon, apart from the gearshift plate, it will be gloss. like the bit to the left.

It only took a few minutes to wrap the cardboard cutouts, but I was surprised to discover the carbon vinyl doesn't actually stick to cardboard. At all :wallbash: I had to use sticky tape on the back

Anyway, what pushed me to do it, is the parking / security buttons pack is actually fixed to the trim, and not mounted inside the console, like the a/c pack, so it would have been loose and knocking about ... can't leave with that, even for 10 days or so

Whys it going to be 10 days? Seen dipping being done in hours if not minutes on wheeler dealers and the likes?

p.s i love the gloss carbon, I would have done it all like that ;)

Why didn't you just wrap the trim? You seem to be excellent at it as you've done a near perfect job ;)

I'm in no rush, and that time includes posting the parts back and forth. Plus there's a couple of dipped samples on their way to me, they will cross path with my parts, by the time I get the samples and decide on which to go for, my parts would reach the chap doing the dipping.

There will be a couple of more gloss parts, but mostly matt - too much gloss would be out of character for this interior, I feel.

I had a few bits wrapped in previous cars, looks okay to begin with, but you soon start noticing imperfections ... Plus it's one thing to wrap a flat, or slightly curved trim, and entirely different one to do a perfect job on a complex piece with many twists and turns - beyond my expertise for sure.

Ah right, fair enough. All worth it for the end result :)
Look forward to seeing after photos ;)

Well, all the parts been sent off, I did a little repair on two of them with JB Weld, and wanted to get it perfect, hence a slight delay.

Surprisingly, it turns out there are 26 different parts, including 8 just for gloss coating (which are basically 7 buttons, and the PRND panel from the gearshift base).

There are a couple of duplicates - two sets of gearshift handle parts, and two front covers from the armrest sliding tray - the current one, with the phone console, and another one from a brand new coin box, which will replace the phone holder, once the Audio 20 and MOST components are banished.

Decided to go for gloss carbon for the wheel's button surrounds, but most of the rest will stay matt.

Just to keep the entertainment value, here's another temporary fix - compare it to the pic above and you'll know ...

I'm keeping the one still apart, and will be selling the already assembled standing upright handle soon.

Steering wheels controls:

These will look great on my new steering wheel:

I hope I can fit all these, before next Saturday's BOTG, otherwise I'll turn up with cardboard parts in the interior :wallbash:

One thing for sure - the newly re-trimmed armrest, in a matching perforated leather won't be on, as Jack is still working on it ...
