My S320 is due an A Service in 400 miles at around the 75,000 mile mark.
The actual cost of an A Service is only around £220 from a main dealer, but they also want to replace the air filter at £51 and the cabin pollen filter/carbon filter at a staggering £153. The filters almost double the price of the service
As the car is under a Tier 1 Mercedes Warranty I don't mind the service cost or even the cost of the air filter as I can see these being essential items to maintain the car and to stop any potential accusations of the car not being serviced/maintained properly in the event of a warranty claim, but I don't see the air cabin filters in the same light.
I've seen 3rd party filters for as little as £30 on the internet. I appreciate they might not be the same quality, but it's a massive saving for what I see as a non-essential item in terms of looking after the car properly - I can see their importance in filtering out nasty niffs and other air-borne pollutants, but that's a different thing altogether.
Do you think the I should pay for the filter then fit a 3rd party one or am I likely to affect the warranty in some esoteric way by telling them not to replace that filter at the service, and potentially give myself problems in the future if I make a warranty claim?
