On the 'Logbook' (or V5), if you change the address of the registered keeper, does the number of owners stay the same?

Logic would say that yes, as the keeper is the same, the number of registered keepers should show as the same.

But logic doesn't always follow, so I was interested to know from anyone who's moved recently (and who's been bored enough to check!)

Many thanks :)

Change of address doesn't change the number of owners. Changing names at the same address (unless changing by Deed Poll - I guess) would.

That's what I would have thought, but just checking!

Has anyone else done this recently and can say for certain too? I guess most people wouldn't normally check.

Last time I did this was 10 years ago, and it didn't add an owner then. I pressume it would still be the same now.

I only did a change of address about 3 years ago, sure there are people who have moved more recently than that? I would definitely check any documents that came back. Also worth taking a photocopy of your original before you send it away, always compare details upon receipt of your new documents.

As others have said, a change of address does not add to the keeper count. A change of name even living at the same address does add a keeper. I tried that one when I bought a car from my brother. I wanted to change the owner, then change the address afterwards but it added to the keeper count. Was worth a try I suppose :o

We wanted to do that with my bro-in-laws car too :o - never mind!

It doesn't add to the number of keepers. This will stay the same. But remember a V5 does not state who the legal owner is anyway.

Brilliant, thanks guys/girls

Just wanted to be certain :)

Cheers,

Will

Changed the address on both my mercs last week and can confirm number of keepers will stay the same.

A change of name even living at the same address does add a keeper.
The special case to this is where the name of the registered keeper has been mis-spelled or is incomplete. In that case the number of keepers does not increment - or at least it didn't in 2002 when I last had that problem.

The problem of mis-spelled or incomplete regsitered keeper names seems to have multiplied exponentially since dealers have been permitted to register new vehicles online. The last time it happened my christian name was spelt with two L's instead of one; Yesterday I returned the V5 for my new W204 (registered last week) to DVLA because the dealer registered it to Phil <surname> rather than Philip <surname>. Why can't they read what's written and transcribe it correctly?

Yup I changed the address on all 3 of ours last year - number of keepers unaffected.

Of course you have no choice - it's an offence not to get the address changed on V5 and driving licence if you move.

Same here - changed address twice on two cars no change in owner numbers
