Cheap E320 Coupe for someone?

Seems cheap enough,

Has had the loom changed, as iv read somewhere the looms on these can perish....

Not my colour at all though..........

What's it worth all done? £3/4Kish ?

Even - worst case - a replacement engine and a few hundred for paint, it's still viable enough I'd say?

Obviously best if you can do the head yourself, shouldn't cost a fortune.

As long as the head has not developed a crack & only requires a skim, this one could be quite cheap to put back on the road....

Would love to know how many previous owners, why many sellers still insist on not putting this sort of vital in formation in the ad is beyond me, because when its not there buyers come to the conclusion that it must have lots of previous owners anyway, & in many cases when its not included this is not even the case. Anything under 5 is acceptable with a car of this age & not likely to put off potential buyers.

That is a Nice car for the money, but have to agree with Dee, awful colour for that model does not suit it IMO....

I spoke with the owner today, as I was interested in the car. He was a very pleasant, genuine chap, who has a couple of other coupes and is a member of a Mercedes club. I did intend to go and see it this afternoon, however I decided that it's too much of a risk for me.

The car has had 5 previous owners (i did an HPI check and it's come out clear) and a good level of service history, although nothing official for a couple of years from about 2005. As it says, the wiring loom was replaced in 2003.

This is the story behind the gasket failure:

His wife was driving the car a couple of months ago, when the oil light came on intermitantly. She phoned her husband, who said he had checked the level a fee days previously, so not to worry unduly. Shortly afterwards, the light came on again and did not go out. The car was stopped and a local mobile mechanic who happened to be in the garage where stopped made a quick check and topped up the oil, putting in quite a substantial amount. Soon after, on the same journey, one of the radiator hoses blew off and that was it.

The car now has a fully oiled up radiator / hoses / etc.

My worry is that the car may have overheated significantly and if so, who knows what the state of the engine is until it's taken apart. With oil in the cooling system for the last couple of months, the hoses may have been damaged aswell.

I can see the cost possibly escalating, with a worry of an engine rebuilt required and then you've probably spent more than the cars worth.

Pity, as I'm very tempted and it looks like a very clean car, but perhaps not at that current price.

What do you all think? Is it worth me giving it a punt or shall I save my pennies and get one that requires no work?

It all comes down to what you can do yourself.

If you can strip and inspect the engine, then you'll know more about how best to fix it. If not, you'll be better off paying for a replacement engine to be fitted - I'd imagine you could get a decent engine fitted (with some warranty) for a grand or thereabouts.

Then add in the cost of the bodywork, plus a few quid for niggles, it'll be about £3K all straight and done.

Not a bad price if you want one and are willing to pay the low end of the correct price, but quite an expensive car if you wanted a bargain.

Personally, if I had the time and space (and didn't have four cars in the household already!), I'd buy it for the asking price or close to it, strip the head off and go from there.

Potentially, you could have yourself a clean, genuine E320 sportline coupe with good history, fair miles, new wiring loom and a replaced head gasket for £2K if you do it yourself and don't run into too many problems.

get one that requires no work?

They don't exist for less than silly money

To find out about head gasket failure through the warning lights would suggest a less than fastidious maintenance regime.

I'd give Ian Walker or BlackC55 a call.

If it's ONLY the head gasket & a skim how much would that cost to fix.

If it's more than that what could be the problem? Cracked head, cracked block or ?????

Just a head gasket, Id say £4-500. If its anything more cost could easily be the same as the car, if not more.

Hmmm could be a candidate for a C36 engine swap too then  :D

Finding a C36 engine is hard work, not to mention expensive to rebuild.
The e36 only comes with a 4sp box, the 5sp gearbox needs a feed from the ecu which the c36 ecu would not give. you would therefore need to change the gearbox back to a 4sp and change the diff and prop shaft.

Dammit, foiled

The engine I have would fit. Id have bought it as a little project if I hadnt bought the e36. I need to sell the e320 I have at the moment.
But yes it would fit.

Oh and the turbo kit is not for sale at the moment, as I might just decide to twin turbo the 3.6 engine.

Be careful. My 1994 E320 was a very tough car. My mistake, taking it to MBZ. Cost me £4.5K so far, and still not right. Once of these days, I am going to write a book....
