Cheap Rust Removal

Has anyone tried Coca Cola as a rust remover? That has phosphoric acid in.

Sid

You can probably run your E300D on it when you have finished, (only joking!)

hehe, atleast i looked more like a caterer when i bought 100 litres of veg oil and a big container of vinegar from the cash and carry!!

I used to use this very concept to remove rust off of my bike spokes and body when i was a kid, i thought it was magic :D. great post.

[note to self] Do not trust Dieselman :D

Well, you know.

But I did try it on the car, some metal brackets and those bolts, which I considered to be a fairly controlled test.

I wonder if Silversaloon can post any pictures of the success he's had.? I wanted to use vinegar but bought some stuff from Bilt-Hamber after the trial failed.

i'll get some pics up. certainly not as good as the links on the original post, but it certainly removed some rust.

i've also left some stuff in it for about a week now. maybe there wont be anything left!!

Not magic, it was your dad slapping on the sulphuric acid when you went in to watch postman pat :)

still not sorted the pics out yet but i did the bottom of the bumper stiffener that requires a little welding - after about a week soaked in the vinegar and a brisk rub with a wire brush, the metal is no longer brown rust, but nice silver fresh metal, ready to be welded :) it definatly works - probably not as good as the "proper rust treatments" but ideal if you want to get rid of most of the rust at a cheap cost.

Guys the stuff to get that's in 99% of rust removers, well only a few % by volume is ORTHO-phosphoric acid. This dissolves the oxide and leaves a nice protective film you can paint over.
But Sid6 is right, normal posphoric as in coke will still etch the rust (and eventually the metal) so watch it.

If you want some Ortho-phosphoric, get yourself off to an air conditiong or refrigeration firm, as its used as an industrial descaler (and some domestics) such as ice machines. i.e. pubs!

Word of warning though ! This is serious and why I posted, many alloy wheel cleaners use a dilute solution of a chemical called Hydrofluoric acid. Not Hydrochloric. It has flourine atoms that can easily pass through skin. It causes nasty burns that wont heal and even a small amount can kill. It can cause small burns without you realizng it and attacks the calcium in skin and bones. It etches specifically oxides, such as aluminium and silicon (glass) and leaves metals with a white coating !!!

This is NOT safety overkill, I cant emphasize this enough.

Be VERY carefull with this, it realy realy is nasty stuff. AWAYS wear thick rubber gloves such as Marrigolds at least, and dont breath in vapors.
