Chrome AMG tailpipes - can they be restored?

If I remember, Rashman used very fine wet and dry on his and they came up like new, I remember seeing them at one of the meets and even a clean freak like me was unbelievably surprised. Then he used a cutting compound, cant remember the exact name of it, but I used 3M cutting compound and that alone was brilliant and bought mine up to looking new again.

Have a word with the Rashman.

I too have used very fine wet and dry paper on the insides of the exhaust on my CLK. It really does work..

Im going to have a go at them again next time with some 3M compound and more wet and dry after hearing that :D

Peter(C43AMG) had his tips re-chromed on the CL55 last year. Drop him a message and ask where he got it done. He sent them away and they came back as good as brand new!

Metal polish or wirewool only works if the tips arn't damaged from excess polishing or corrosion.

I have sent dvb a pm with the information re the company i used. This the contact info if anyone else is interested.

Marque Restore Ltd Tel No : 024 7662 2225 Chrome plating of classic car and bike parts. Full restoration including vintage and custom. Specialists in Jaguar, Rolls Royce, Bently, Triumph, MG, Aston Martin.

They are in Coventry and i can highly recommend them,a very old and well established company, have a look at there website. It's been over a year since they re-chromed my tips and they are still like new,all i have to do to clean them is to use soapy water.

I tried Solvol, Brasso - you name it - all helped, but didn't get the black crap off the lower rim, nor very good on the inner oval part.

I then tried some steel wool - not like a Brillo pad, but 0000 grade for applying furniture wax. It's extremely fine, so won't scratch and it cut through the black like nothing else. Just dip in soapy water & rub gently

You'll get it in any good DIY place or hardware shop - comes in a big roll so if you're only using it for the tailpipes it will last literally years

If you're looking to remove deposits on the tailpipes then you need to use either a solvent or a light abrasive with care. Just be aware that any abrasive will go through decorative chrome plating eventually.

If you're looking to remove corrosion or scratching then stripping, polishing and re-plating is the only option. When choosing someone to do this remember that decorative chrome plating won't hide pitting or poor polishing work.

Marque certainly got rid of all of the pitting, scratches etc after they re-plated the tips.

Sorry, I should have been more specific: the pitting (and any scratches) needs to be polished out prior to re-plating. If the pitting's deep then there's just not enough metal to polish; light pitting can, of course, be polished out. Poor polishing prior to plating results in a poor overall finish.

I believe new ones are circa £60 - if so then why bother getting them replated ?

Is that £60 - don't ask any questions ??

£60 plus vat for the CL trims, they look the same as the SL55 ones but longer. And the SL needs 4 lol

Hi Dave, Where would I get them from for £60? I'm looking to replace my aftermarket twin square tips back to original AMG twin ovals. Mel.

That was the price my indie quoted they use inch cape I believe, they are not AMG stamped just the normal ones for my CL - also there are some genuine ones on UK eBay but at no discount

The tips are an integral part of the exhaust.

That's very convenient Dave,it's a shame they don't on the 55's. You could get them Re-Chromed for less than £60.00

Ive just posted some for sale. Think they will fit.
