Chrysler Crossfire

Not really my style of car .....
BUT
My mate has one and uses it daily and loves it.
For the money - It's not a great risk.

Check (I know you will) plenty of room for rapid application of opposite lock on Velcro Bend. If its a poorly sighted bend a banksman (up a tree out of harms way) on his mobile to your co pilot to let you know you have a clear shot at it. Fortunately you have travelled that road many'a'time so you will know what it looks like going backwards as it were. :-)

Got it covered it's a closed road when I try this ;-)

When you test drive a car do you usually have a mate up a tree en route ??

With some patience your friend should get a superb W208 for £2,995, a great car rather than the hotch-pitch the Chrysler is.

I know where you are coming from and he loves my W208 but it's not a 2 seater sports car and in the 3.2 you can't get a manual and you could never make a 230k as quick as a Crossfire. It's just the car is local to us and it caught his eye, I've actually had a look at it today body is mint and interior looks good but windows were icy. Only issue I can see is rear spoiler is deployed which it shouldn't be this is also usually an indicator of other electrical issues

Well I've always liked the odd style for the price have the fun most people loose that cash n the fist few weeks owning a crap low end motor just to save on mpg and have no fun I chanced a splurge on my old SL and loved the gras of doing the change from the nom

I would have got a PT just before the Sl as a fun car but their rag top looks an afterthought my grownup lads call my SL the bat mobile some one will all ways put your right

No test drive until weather improves and we get a thaw which looks like Friday at earliest

Car choice is a subjective, and buying a crossfire suggest someone who marches to the beat of his own drum...:thumb:

I agree when you buy your car better to play with 5k or less on some bodies well looked after car in any style more fun less costly and change more often if a big bill comes in on repairs you can walk away from a mistake or whim unlike if leased or hp around your neck odd ball cars more for less dde04ddea6go for it
I've had lots of cars and driving fun that way plus others don't care when parking next to your pride and joy causing damage any longer

Thanks I've dropped in over there already and they are z very helpful bunch indeed body parts are the issue but now a good source of non genuine panels is available

How did this pan out?
When our SLK goes back in a years time I was thinking of changing to a 4x4, may be Forrester or Freelander. But had thoughts of also getting a cheap roadster for occasional use.
Browsing Autotrader today I came across an 04 Crossfire rag top 3.2 auto with very low miles. Looks very good condition (which you would expect with the low miles).
Up til now I thought an Audi TT would fit the bill, but wondering about giving this a look

Suspended the search until the weather gets better, the one we were looking at sold before we had chance to test drive it.

If you look around , perhaps spending just a little bit more , you can now pick up R129's for under £4K .

Some will be dogs , but there will be some decent cars in there if you buy wisely .

While I'm not keen on the Crossfire , a R129 is a proper , solidly engineered Mercedes and despite being older , I'm sure a much better car to own and drive . Remember it's a W124 under the skin . Much nicer looking car too .

Just had a browse for R129 SL's and R230's are available under £10K. What are R230's like for reliability/ownership costs?

I've looked at a couple of R129's at £4K now and have to say they were much better than I expected , but there are lots of clearly dodgy cars out there not even worth looking at . I've looked primarily at 300SL's because of the reliability and simpler maintenance of the M103 , besides I'll just use it for pootling around roof down in the summer and not interested in burning up the roads .

I don't know about R230's , but to my mind a R129 300SL is basically a familiar W124 , with probably better made bodywork as a bonus and that complex hood mechanism as a potential downside .

Edit - I just had a quick look on Autotrader , ( it was last year I was thinking of getting one and ended up leaving the 300 I drove because of a problem with the hood operation , also drove a 500 but felt it was going to be too costly to run and maintain ) .

The car below is a 320 and looks quite respectable ( photo doesn't show wear on seat bolster and boot badge looks odd ) , the 300 shouldn't have the engine wiring harness problem that afflicts 320's , but the one I drove previously was as clean as this car here

While I wouldn't expect perfection , you could be pleasantly surprised with a four grand SL .

I think in all honesty I'd take a three grand Crossfire over a four grand R129, in actual fact I wouldn't go hunting for a R129 without a minimum budget of six grand along with a contingency fund which would equate to the price of the Crossfire.

R230's are generally known as money pits (ABC,PSE, roof and water ingress issues etc)...however there are good uns out their, you just need to find one that's been 'sorted'...I have often wanted a R230 but after speaking with my local indy they remind me of potential ownership reality:eek:

R129 seem much easier to maintain and generally reliable, I can vouch for my R129 300SL:thumb:
