CL65 AMG on Fifth Gear last night...

General overview was that it has so much power it is "frightening" to quote Tiff Nedell. He summed up by basically saying that it is better suited to motorway cruising rather than blasting around B-Roads.

was quite a good review, he didnt like the fact that it wasnt a mcclaren f1 for its ability on twisty roads, but we all know that and no one cares!

Only 20 being supplied over here.

Is that only 20 coming here? I can sort of vaguely recall Evo mag saying that Benz expects to sell 20 a year.

oh maybe yes! not sure if that was global, seems an awfully low figure though..

Everyone that I have spoken to reckons that the review was crap, and that he tried to compare it to many true supercars.

The Cl65 does exactly what is says on the tin. It's a CL with a big donk.

I would happily buy this car for the money. It still has some level of practicality for the performance.

His review was okay, I don't think the car was his cup of tea as it had an auto box and he would have preferred a manual.

One interesting snippet was that the engine has been de-rated slightly so that the auto box can cope with the torque levels  Power is at 612bhp but the torque has been reduced slightly from a potential 1,200N/m to approx 1,000N/m. I think those are the figures I'm just recalling them from memory.

S.

I can see what he meant about the power, my S55 which is basically the same car as the CL55 with virtually identical performance, from the lights the s55 will spin it's wheels to near 50 mph, with the traction control on it will intervene off the mark up to about 60mph and you still get quite a bit of wheelspin, on the move it's not too difficult to break traction on 2nd and 3rd gear corners in the dry and easy in the wet even with the traction control on, kicking down hard at any thing up to around 70mph in a straight line with the traction control on still gets wheelspin. Given this the CL65 with a fifth more power is going to be a scream.

But the handling of the S55 and the CLs I have driven is surprisingly good, they have enormous grip and although the ABC keeps the cars pretty flat they could transfer the weight a bit better on a series of S bends, but they really are impressive for such big cars.

Evo mag CL55

"The CL's natural habitat is Continental motorways and fast, sweeping A-roads, though the last CL55 and the SL55 have shown that, with ABC suspension, these big Mercs can handle the cut and thrust of bumpier, twistier tarmac with aplomb. "

Top gear reviewed the CL55 in Nov 2002

"With a reprogrammed Active Body Control system, the CL corners in a manner that belies its bulk, with next to no body roll or dive under braking. And the power steering, which is finger light at low speed, weights up brilliantly. "
