I can see what he meant about the power, my S55 which is basically the same car as the CL55 with virtually identical performance, from the lights the s55 will spin it's wheels to near 50 mph, with the traction control on it will intervene off the mark up to about 60mph and you still get quite a bit of wheelspin, on the move it's not too difficult to break traction on 2nd and 3rd gear corners in the dry and easy in the wet even with the traction control on, kicking down hard at any thing up to around 70mph in a straight line with the traction control on still gets wheelspin. Given this the CL65 with a
fifth more power is going to be a scream.
But the handling of the S55 and the CLs I have driven is surprisingly good, they have enormous grip and although the ABC keeps the cars pretty flat they could transfer the weight a bit better on a series of S bends, but they really are impressive for such big cars.
Evo mag CL55
"The CL's natural habitat is Continental motorways and fast, sweeping A-roads, though the last CL55 and the SL55 have shown that, with ABC suspension, these big Mercs can handle the cut and thrust of bumpier, twistier tarmac with aplomb. "
Top gear reviewed the CL55 in Nov 2002
"With a reprogrammed Active Body Control system, the CL corners in a manner that belies its bulk, with next to no body roll or dive under braking. And the power steering, which is finger light at low speed, weights up brilliantly. "
