Guys, quick question-Clay makes the paint smooth, so does a good going over with a DA polisher. I have always clayed and then used the DA. Is there any advantage to this or should I just go straight in with the DA polisher to remove small scratches and swirls?

In a word - no. Clay removes little nasties stuck into the top coat, so if you DA first these little nasties could easily stick to the pad and scratch - negating what you are trying to do!

Hi, I'm a new member here trying to work out how to start an "Intro" thread however, I can answer you on this.

I do have my cars professionally detailed (always using Nathan at "Cambridge Autogleam"), but I would say use the clay bar first. I am always amazed at just how many contaminants the clay can find and lift off, even when the surface already looks flawless. It's not worth missing a few that just add scratches whilst you're trying to remove them by short cutting this part of the process.

As stated a DA will never remove the crap thats settled in the clear coat. I would also go a step further and prior to claying use something like " Iron X ", this will breakdown any metal deposits that have embedded them selves into the clearcoat. Be warned though, it stinks!!!!
