Firstly hiya and i have a bit of a dilema ,for years i have always owned the usual cars, fiesta, corsa, focus etc....but i have decided to go for something a little different with my budget,we have saw a 1997 r-reg clk 230 full leather, electrics etc........however its covered 131,000 miles something we are not used to and to be honest is quite daunting.
Do these have a belt or a chain and when shall it be changed i would any comments to help me out on this one thanks

Cant help with your car you have seen, as i am not very good with prices etc and what need doing when.

However my last two mercs have done quite high mileage ( due to the amount of miles i do per year with work ). My current one has just passed 130,000 and still happy. I tend to spend between £500 and £1,000 on normal servicing costs per year and am very happy with this. I have had fords, vaxhall etc, they have tended to have more things wrong with them, so i decided to move to mercedes.

Besides normal wear and tear i have yet to have anything properly break, however when a car does get to that sort of miles you have to expect things to start breaking.

Good luck with your buying, just recommend that you know the history of the car, get it checked by someone who knows what there doing and make sure its just been serviced...

I'm sure its an excellent car. I drive a CLK 230K and I've been entirely pleased with it, however, get used to the fact that every time you get it serviced there will probably be something requiring attention. After all, its a 10 year old car - nothing lasts forever and the same is true of mechanical components.

If you don't want to use a MB dealership, check for specialists in your area - they are a good way to save money if you're happy to not be offered courtesy cars and other things a dealer would do for you.

Additionally, remember that you're looking at a car which cost around £30K when new, you're not going to be able to run it for the cost of a new £5K car.

Finally, welcome to the forum and good luck in your search. :)

Check for rust, they corrode like 1980's Datsuns, I kid you not.
