HI All,

I bought a 2004 CLK last Saturday. I was supposed to collect it this week, the dealer I bought it off has now said that due to a fault with oil pressure sensor the car wont be ready until next week, Not a great start to ownership but I would rather it was sorted out properly and at least the dealer is being honest.

They are replacing this but are they prone to failure or could there be some underlying issue.

Just one more question, The car is the facelift with the Audio 20, and the right air con controls however it is on an 04 plate and I think registered in August 2004. This was one of the main reasons I went for this car. I just want to be sure its not a retro fit. How can I check, as I have only seen a few in this model year with this spec. Having checked in and around the forum the face lift dates seem to be for 2005 models.

Thanks in advance.

Marcel-Anthony

Thanks Marcel

There isn't an oil pressure sensor. Just a level sensor.

What did he say was wrong with it?

no they did not, but they have said a warning came up on the display,

Perhaps they meant oil pressure switch?

Not sure if your car has one, but I replaced it on my previous car (Vauxhall) and it cost £5 and took about 10 minutes to change (unplug wire, unscrew old unit, screw in new unit, tighthen to torque, refit wire, start engine, check for leaks...).

The worry of course if it was not the sensor/sender/switch that were at fault, but the engine itself which was being run with low oil pressure. No way of knowing for sure though... not unless you trust the seller to be telling the truth.

2004 would be facelift, and at any rate retrofitting the entire dash is doable but a massive undertaking and unlikely to have been done to your car.

Are the headlamps lenses clear, or opaque? Facelift models have clear lenses while pre-facelift have opaque lenses (assuming not HIDs, which have always been clear).

Thanks for the info Markjay.

The head lights are clear, so I feel comfortable now its the face lift. what got my concern re this is if you check autotrader there are lots of CLKs that are 04/54 plates with the older dash.

Is there a test I can do to check if the car is running with low oil pressure.

Thanks

Short of removing the oil pressure switch (assuming it has one) and connecting an oil pressure gauge - probably not.

As far as I know the ECU does not need this info and therefore it won't come-up on STAR, but I am not 100% sure.

At any rate, even with an oil pressure gauge, if say the oil pump was blocked or faulty and they fixed the problem, the pressure will now be back to normal but you won't be able to know what damage may have already been caused while the pressure was low.

But this is an extreme scenario - most likely it is a faulty sensor/sender/switch/gauge/light etc etc rather than an actual low oil pressure issue.

In short, I would ask them to explain what exactly was the issue, and see if it makes sense and if they are confident (e.g. ask them to point to the location of the part they replaced in the engine bay, or to show you the old part, etc) - but if they seem unsure or are unable to tell you what has been done than this could be cause for concern.
