Brother topped up his oil on his '99 CLK 320, he did not overfill & it was below the MAX level.

Upon driving, it says 'Oil overfill, drain oil' on his dash display.

As hes now on the Motorway and cannot do this, is anything likely to happen?

Its not good for the engine to drive with too much oil.

has he stoped and rechecked the level manually?

If he definately didn't overfill the oil then it's just the sensor that's duff. Pretty common.

drop half a litre and re check keep revs down to 2.500 oil expands when pushed and hotter oil seals will go do a check on a stone cold block soon

After about 100miles, he said the warning went and hasnt returned.

Cheers guys

Hi,

I have found that quite a few modern oils expand a bit more than expected when hot. Depending on the oil used, it could happen that the oil is perfect on maximum when cold, but when hot, the level increases too much. On turbocharged cars I use Motul 300v, and have started to fill a few millimeters below max. when cold in order to make sure that the level doesn't go up to much when hot. Especially on my ML270, I find that if I fill it to max. when cold, the level rises too much when hot, with the result that it chucks a bit in the breather system when going at full throttle, over 4K revs, uphil, round a righthand corner. This result is a bit of blue smoke out of the back. An immediate check after this happens shows oil level to high due to expansion of oil when hot.

Job

I'd be surprised if oils actually expand much when hot and also that different brands have differing amounts of expansion.

Are you sure this isn't down to foaming of the oil causing expansion?

If my E320cdi is filled to "max" when cold, I get a warning when the engine oils up after say 10 minutes of driving, telling me the oil level is too high and that I should reduce the oil level. A manual check at this time (I still have a dipstick) does indeed show a couple of milimetres over max. It also is fairly smokey when this happens, but the smoke vanishes when removing some of the oil so that the message goes away.

I had the same thing on Sunday after a few hours on hot motorways. Oil level OK when I left, but at home 190 miles later upon restarting car to put in garage 1/2 hour after arrival it shouts "oil overfill" at me.

Following morning "oil level OK". I really hate these oil level sensors.

I thought this at first but even the low foaming oil as used on the Isuzu 3.0 diesel engine with the oil pressured unit injectors expands just as much!
Oils expand quite a bit. Some cars (my Subaru) have a max. level for cold oil on the dipstick and another max level for hot oil on the dipstick. The difference between the marks at a guess is about 0.6 litres. The difference between min and cold max is about 1 litre. The car takes 4.5 litres at an oil change. So I assume that expansion seems to be over 10%?

Oil and other hydrocarbons do expand with temperature. Some time ago there was a big fuss because some oil companies were said to use a wheeze of delivering "hot" (i.e above 25C) diesel fuel to their bulk customers.

When this cools to a UK average 15C weighs the same but it shrinks in volume by 1%! Not a big deal for us but soon adds up if you are a volume user or a fuel retailer.

No idea what the Coefficient of Cubic Expansion of engines oils might be, but there must be some if going from 20C to 100C. However, foaming will bulk up the oil far more.

I stick to the faulty switch angle. My ML 270 did the same and all was fixed with a new switch on the sump. Esasy fix but do it at the next oil change.
