Hi Folks,

I am planning to upgrade my tail lights to LED. Has anyone tried this? Any advice on CAN BUS compatibility before I proceed with purchasing a pair?

Many thanks,
Genc

They won't work unless you change the cluster wiring, you can't just use ones with built in resistors.

Hi KillerHERTZ

Thanks for the reply. Some of the shops advertise them as Plug & Play and error free. I was unsure how far these claims go and this is why I wanted to investigate first. Changing the cluster wiring seems a lot of work, Is it worth going for the LEDs on your experience?

Don't mess with tail lights! Imagine if they failed

unless you rewire them they won't work. Just not worth it.

Thanks for the advice KillerHERTZ,
I just seen your CLK transformation project and I am impressed. I take my hat off to your work.
These are the mods I was planning, in implementing order:
What my MRS will know:
Xenon/LED Headlights,
SL style single fin grille
Led tail lights
Sound system
Parking Sensors
Estmated cost 1k
What my MRS will not know:):
ECU REMAP
AMG W204 style Bodywork
Hard suspension & Springs( Reported as failed to MRS/white lies )
Air Filter upgrade,
New Exhaust system.(Reported as failed to MRS/white lies)
Partial Paint of Interior in Cranberry RED.
Estimated cost 1.5K
I am planning to do the styling work myself and mechanical work at a trusted garage.Any suggestions are welcome.
Once I have a starting point I will open a project thread.

Estmated cost 1k.

The xenons alone will cost you £400 and then you have to either take it to MB dealer (£60ph min) to have it coded to accept the xenons or have your (my) amazing mechanic contact Autologic to write the code for you.

The after market LED rear lights need the facelift bulb plates and loads of resitors. Looks like a ball ache to mess around with as was fitting the facelift rear lights was on mine.

Thanks for the advice P3tchy. I might need to recalculate my budget :(. I have heard e few times how tough was switching to facelift tail lights.
I wouldn't have a problem giggling with resistors and stuff but I am concerned with the durability of aftermarket lighting (especially LED). Will see, I might need to compromise a few things in my plan.
Nice CLK you have by the way, loved the alloys!

Hi guys,

Just received the LED tailights and they are a Joy and easy to fit. I spent about an hour most. I Also changed the grille or an updated look. I will be opening a separate thread soon.!

Those LED lights look ridiculous.
Sell them to me for a fiver and I will dispose of them in an environmentally safe way.

I never went with them on mine as the taillight part is LED. If it was only the brake lights (as per the W211/W209 I would have fitted them.

Live, they do look better than in picture especially at night time, it makes a huge difference. They were a bit hard on the eye initially so, they wouldn't be everybody's choice I guess. (For the serious part)

I could give you a fiver for the sarcasm, but next time save it for your AMG buddies.(for the non serious one)

Looks good, where from?

Yours is a facelift already so you didn't need to worry about modifying the holes to fit the bulb plates.

I had the same grill but swapped back to a 3 bar as I did'nt feel it looked right. On yours with the sport bumper it looks fine though.

No p3tchy, I did not need any modification and installing was straight forward (a bit of cable management issues only). I got them from a German dealer on ebay International and he assured me they will be trouble free before purchase. I believe that if you done the mods already it can be pretty easy to implement. ( I will attach a link once I got access to a PC, currently mobile only).

I bought a set of them 3 years ago I think from the same seller, fitted in 15 mins each side, came with a pair of black plastic square electronics box for each unit that connects into the wire loom connectors for the tail lights, never had a problem with them, look so much better on the car, they also came with a pair of reflectors to stick on the rear of the car as the light units don't have built in reflectors which are a legal requirement, the car still seems to pass the MOT with out them.

I am very impressed with them too. I was not aware what the reflectors were for :). I hope it passes MOT as the car would look so ugly with them installed.

DRL's

I also put these LED DRL's at the front keeping fog lights.
