...a rental..not saying what !
Got an interesting(???) problem here. I've had a quick look around teh forum and can see some 320 cut out threads but nothing quite the same.

Basically on 2 occasions (first on the day I bough the car!) I've had the problem where the car would start briefly 'rev up' to about a 1000rpm, then just die. Once it happens, it occurs repeatedly (i.e on attempted re-starts); solution being to remove key, leave it a few seconds try again then hey presto...off you go.

Worth also mentioning that occasionally, it just does nothing at all when the key is turned, no click...this hasn't happened for a while and I have just bought a new key as I noticed that the old one was getting a bit shaky (prob a flat battery in that one, but, it was my only key, its looking very battered/cracked and I didn't just want to take it apart and replace battery without a backup).

Any ideas? no errors displayed on the dash..

Cheers

Does the same problem occur with the new key too? Sounds like the EIS playing up.

Yes it does, got the new key on fri, cut out again on sat...i was hoping that the cutting out was a key problem...seems not. Mind you, I had actually forgotten about this as it only happened the once before.. Probably worth mentioning that on both occasions, engine was hot (as in normal) and had only just been stopped for a few secs.

btw, what an 'EIS'?

cheers.

OK, after thinking about it..I'll guess at electronic ignition switch.....

Yup you got it. Its the Electronic Ignition Switch.

Ah if the engine was hot on both occasion i would have to say its more likely to be the CPS. Very common and now that you've mentioned that the engine was hot, that is what i would look at.

thansk fior that,

but..erm..got me again...cps? would that be crank position sensor?

If so, would this not also show itself whiel ruunning.

Is this something that would show up as a stored fault code?...btw its a 99 pre-facelift model.

Yep you got it right again. Your good at this.

It can be quite intermittent and it can shut the engine off just like that, while your doing 70mph on the motorway, or just idling in traffic. Ive heard it can be quite scary. It generally does this when the engine is hot. And you wont be able to able to start it straight away either until it cools.

Can I ask if its only done it a few times or regularly? Over a period of how long? Do you drive the car daily? Because if its only done it a couple of times and hasnt done it again for a long time and you use the car regularly it wont be the CPS.

I believe it doesn't store a fault code, well not on this era of MB models, happy to be corrected though. The fault will show up as it happens and its connected on STAR. Otherwise it will not show up if connected at a later stage when car is operating normally.

:D:D:D looks like I've got a new job..guessing TLA's:bannana:

Car is used for daily commute..15 miles each way, mix of high speed and stop/start...and has been for last 6 months.

Only done this on 2 occasions....on first day I got it...imagine the thoughts that went through my head!!!

Then once at the weekend.

Does sound like the CPS; mine wouldn't start one day, then it was fine for about a week, then it wouldn't start again, and got progressively worse after that.

Only ever did it at idle, or when trying to hot start. Leave it for 15 minutes or so and it would fire up.

Very cheap replacement, if it's not been done, worth getting it done now anyway.

popped an odb2 reader on it this evening, no fault codes reported so its either leave it and see what happens or start replacing things..starting with cps......think I will leave it anyone want to start running odds on when/where I will get stranded????

Obviously 500 miles from home in the middle of the night, raining, mobile battery flat..having doscovered that breakdown cover has lapsed anyway...on christmas eve is an odds on favourite, any other suggestions?
