CLK320 with 160k - should i even contemplate it???

If you cant get him down on price, try not to let your heart win over your head, there's plenty of other examples out there!

I've heard of that particular dealership (and it's a long way away from me). Nothing I've heard has been complimentary :(.

Go in with your eyes wide open. Preferably propped open with matchsticks.

Cheers,

Gaz

Cheers Gaz - he wasn't exactly the friendliest sounding guy on the phone! I get the impression that its just a car they have had in part ex and they want to shift it on. They are not interested in giving it 12 months MOT (runs out in July) and it doesnt come with any tax (guessing that they probably just cashed the disc in figuring that people will pay the same for the car regardless).

I'm one of the most sceptical and suspicious people about and it has (nearly) always stood be in good stead when buying used. I'll have to be on my guard!

dont go for it .. if he wont mot the car to shift it on there must be something wrong i got my CLK at it s low milage for £5,890 if you gonna pay 3k save a little get something a bit better.. i have just over 100k on the m112 V6 engine its as sound as it was a 80k so the milage is not offputing as long as ignition leads and spark plugs an oil have all been changed regular

By all means go and look. But be prepared to turn and walk away is all I'm saying ;).

I think they do quite a bit of business with Japanese imports, which is where I've heard the negative feedback.

Cheers,

Gaz

im going to drive there myself and by myself so no chance of me walking away with an inpulse purchase! ill give it a thorough going over and then sleep on it. If i miss out then so be it but sometimes you just get a feeling about a car.

I think you sound fairly sensible - you're obviously giving it plenty of thought and have done your homework.

The spec is almost certainly about the best you'll find in a 320, it's got a couple of bits that my '55 doesn't even have (rear blind and folding mirrors!).

I'd expect one or two faults at the age and price that it is. The arches will probably have some minor blistering on the lips, along with the blister on the boot lock. You'll probably find that it'll want a couple of tyres, maybe a service due, that sort of thing.

If you're realistic about what to expect and know the price you want to pay I don't think you can go far wrong.

I can see rust on the front arch aswell.

If it was MOTd, and looked alright, id get one for £3k!

Good advice above from Adam230k

Really, many thanks everyone - your thoughts and help are very much appreciated. Keep them coming - ill be swatting up until the morning - ill then feedback on here after ive viewed the car and let you know what i decide!

i was going to try and get him down to £2.5 - had a quick word with him on the phone and he said no way. £2,850 is what he said - im sure there is more room to manouvre but not sure id be able to get it down towards £2k!

Do you really think it is only worth £2k? At that price, it must be worth a lot more in parts, especially with the sat nav system in there.

Hmm not sure what to do now re the price...

We had a guy in on saturday with a mint 230k think it was the **********, had 88K on no rust at all (must have been done) OK realise its not a V6 and no sat nav or command and maybe some people dont value the 4 pots as highly but was a 1999 car and he had paid a straight £2k for it, only had 3 weeks MOT left though, even showed us the receipt, whats more went straight through the MOT not even an advisory.

Now I thought that was a lot of car for the money?

if the guy did not sound very friendly when you were going to buy something from him then what is he going to be like when you have a problem to sort out?
You can do an AWFUL lot better than this for £3k - he is going to have a real hard time selling a 2001 (new car tax rules) 320 petrol auto with 160k miles on it. And so will you when you come to sell it on. Put it into webuyanycar.com and see what comes back - that will tell you its true immediate CASH value - about £1250 is my guess.

Smiley - a good point - i dont have to worry too much as im moving to jersey so no car tax whatsoever - however, i guess come sale time i may have to look further afield so it becomes an issue again. And thank you very much for putting that really annoying themse tune in to my head before i go to sleep! we buy any car... dot com! we buy any car... dot com!

My (smaller) M112 enigine now has 150K on the clock and is still perfectly sweet. The oil cooler/filter seals might need looking at (run your fingers under the oil filter housing to check for oil), but that's only ££, know a few others who have had this problem, but I wouldn't say it was common.

What sort of mileage will you be doing? And how long do you think you will keep it? At 22K miles a year I probably wouldn't buy a 160K car, but if I was doing <10K it's not so much of a worry.

Ah you're moving to Jersey - <1K per year then.:D

Steve- definitely less than 10k - probably less than 4k to be honest!

id only be looking to keep it for around 12-18 months then move it on...

To look at it positively - if it's not greatly behind on maintenance and you're only doing <4k PA, then it's not likely to wear much out.

So - if it went bang after exactly 18 months and you got nothing for it whatsoever in scrap, then it'd have cost just under £2k PA :D

In reality - it'll probably still be running fine, albeit with a bit more rust, and you'll probably get back at least 1/2 of your money, possibly more :)

Not the most expensive form of motoring. A whole car for roughly the cost of the COMAND system and a CD changer when it was new I guess :o

New car tax rules will only apply if it was built after a certain date in 2001.

I know this because mine falls a few days the wrong side of it

Well despite the closure of the M62 this morning, i managed to get across to West Yorks to view the car - i just wish it had been worth the incredibly painful journey!

Here is what i found:

O/S/R rusty wheel arch
O/S/F rusty wheel arch
N/S/F rusty wheel arch
O/S/F rusty wheel arch
Considerable rust and poor repair of rusy around bootlock (well spotted guys!)
Rust on the bonnet just below the grill.
It had done 166k and not 160k as stated.
O/S/F fog light lens smashed (Still working)
N/S/F fog light, not working
Only one key
Bonnet catch / pull inside of car broken off and hanging lose (still works)
Navigation system faulty - sat nav not working "CD Reading Error"
Break lining wear warning on computer
Rip in passenger seat leather
Due for Service A in 3000 miles
1 malfunction on computer (went to 2 by the time i had finished inspecting!)
6" split along the seem of passenger side seat.
Boot floor soaking wet
Inbetween the rear speakers, on the underside of the boot, there appears to have been something ripped off - the metal is cut / bent and rusted around the edges - anybody know what this could be??
Passsenger speak cover smashed
Considerable judder on drivers side window (warn motor?)
Considerable clicking noise at tick over (tappets?)
White gunge under oil gap (headgasket?)
Oil leak from the gasket just below the dip stick
Uneven tyre wear on outer edge on both front tyres
Enginge sounded lumpy, slight blowing despite the revs not hunting at idle.

I didn't bother taking it for a test drive.

On a plus note, the AMG alloy wheels were in very good condition!

The bloke asked me what i thought so i told him the above - he said ahh well, ill still get £3k for it - err not off me you won't pal.

A frustrating day but i guess youve got to kiss a few frogs!

Thanks for all your postings - ill certainly bear everything in mind at my next viewing!
