CLK320 with 160k - should i even contemplate it???

I am glad i didnt drive up t-north to have a look at that, as i was concidering it too!

I found a local one CLK 320 Elegance 1998, 138k on the clock, AMG wheels, FSH and flew through the last MOT in DEC 09, £2795, A little bit of blistering on the rear arch and a tiny bit on the front drivers wing, but nothing that can't be sorted.
I offered £2200 and we settled on £2350
Bargain Y/N?
It says 7100 till the next service, but I will change the oils and filters anyway.
Here she is

I'm glad my journey wasn't a complete waste then Mymini! I made a point of writing down all the faults i found for this exact purpose.

Glad you have got one sorted as well - thats the kind of ball park price range im looking at as i think it represents excellent value for money. I also think i'd prefer the slightly softer ride of the elegance model, just i prefer the darker wooder of the avantgarde!

I personally think its a steal but as long as it brings a smile to your face and you can sleep at night, it doesn't really matter what anybody else thinks!

My search will continue - 2 weeks left until i move - really hoping something turns up in the classifieds!

Sorry to hear you had a wasted journey, shame people still tell you even when asked(especially when they know you are travelling a fair distance)that a car is in good condition etc when it's not,at least you took the time to note the many faults(sounds like a very neglected car)7 walked away, keep looking until you find one that meets your expectations for your budget(there's plenty out there),good luck!

i think most people accept that a used car is not going to be perfect and you expect faults. It would just be nice if people actully described the condition of the car and certainly tell you the faults if you ask them. Hey ho, i'm sure something will turn up!

Now when I was looking i did see a nice one, I will find the link for you, I think it was a 1999 320.......

.........but it had had brake fluid poured on it, Boot lid, Bonnet, and drivers door i think, milage was low too (I think) needed about £300 worth of paint work but it looked good and the seller seemed quite helpful. £2500 I think he was looking for, but the car was in linconshire, too far away from me. But he did say he may accept £2200

........MERCEDES CLK 320 AUTO COUPE VANDEL DAMAGE DIY SALVAGE on eBay (end time 07-Mar-10 20:05:36 GMT)

i gave the guy a call about that one when it first came on as lincolnshire is just next door to me! I thought it looked quite nice but he told me there was no way he would budge from £2500 and i thought that to sort the paint out would cost a hell of a lot more than £300! school boy error - i even no a guy who owns a body shop - mental note to myself, enquire with those who know! Looks like one that got away!

he must have sold it over the weekend as he has got SOLD plastered all over his advert now... might have fallen through though, could be worth an email. Ill get on to it now!

just sent him a text message (not sure he will appreciate the timing!) ill let you know how i get on. If he has been let down by a buyer then he may be a little annoyed and willing to accept a cheeky offer. Always happy to make cheeky offers!

Oh well, i am always trawling the classifieds so if i see a gem i will let you know, i have been looking tonight and by the looks of ebay and pistonheads I got a fairly good deal on mine, so long as it doesnt break.

i think im getting closer guys - will hopefully find out more tomorrow! ill let you know as and when!

I know its a cat c, but the dent in the wing could have classified it as a cat c...
Don't kid yourself, that car's had a big whack in the past. Run away from cars like that when there's plenty of straight ones around.

Also consider the road tax implications if you're looking at 2000/2001 cars.

0 bids would suggest that you are not alone in your thinking. Cat D fine, if i know exactly what has happened to it. You then buy at reduced price but can only ever sell it on (unless unscrupulous) at a reduced price.

Cat C however, means that the car has undergone a serious 'knock', so much so that the car then has to undergo a specialist inspection before it is allowed back on the road. This serious knock would mean that the car has suffered structural damage, likely to the chassis, and therefore it's safety has been compromised.

The fact that it is back on the road however, would suggest that it is road worthy, however, are these cars ever really the same again? I would certainly not be tempted by this as a going concern whatever the price.

But that's just my two pennies worth (incidentally, the car i am hoping to purchase is a Cat D - but it is currently in its accident state so i know exactly what has happened to it!)

If i get it, ill post some pics up, give details of spec and price and then you can all slate me for what poor buy i have just made! :D

Mainly - I'd check for rust. Boot lid, arches, bonnet etc
Check the air con works - make sure the 'EC' light can be switched off (ie, air con operational)
Check the dashboard digital LCD displays are working properly
Check the number of spare keys (£250 each these days :()

See if you can find out when plugs were last changed (there's 12 of them on the V6), and other service items - brakes, filters etc. Ideally the gearbox fluid should have been replaced before now, but many haven't unfortunately.

Tyres are ~ £300-600 a set depending on what you want, so make sure they've got a bit of life in them.

Take it for a spin, make sure the gearbox shifts smoothly, check all the usual stuff you would on any other car - brakes, suspension, steering etc.

Probably a few other bits and bobs - but it gives you something to go on :)

Are the keys really that much? I've just bought a CLK 230 with only one key thinking I could get a spare for less than £50 !!!!

Yep - they are. And you need plenty of ID/documents to order them. They take about a week to arrive IIRC.
