CLK500 Exhaust

Yes £70, £58 for the valve itself and just over £10 for a bit more pipe and clamp. I welded it etc myself so no fitting/labour charge

Wow, what great value! Even with labour for welding, this would be a cheap exhaust mod. The kit looks good: proper 304 stainless.

Please can I ask some questions? Did you install this after both sets of cats but before the resonator? Does having the exhaust exit under the middle of the car not cause problems for gas flow? I wondered whether there is a risk that gas seeps into the car because it is not exiting at the rear? If the valve is open at motorway speeds do you get any drone? (Not that this is much of an issue: you can just close the valve.) Do you have to power it from the in-car 12v socket or did you manage to wire this in more seamlessly somewhere?

Sorry, lots of questions... it's just that your mod is very interesting because I have been considering something to improve the exhaust sound of my E500. Or rather, to try and find some exhaust sound.

...then you could gut the rear boxes.

This is also something I have considered but am not sure what to 'gut'? Should the padding be removed, or some/all of the baffles? Some USA owners report droning after removing or modifying the back boxes, others do not, which is confusing (maybe it comes down to personal taste or amount of motorway driving).

I have been thinking about modding my SL500 exhaust to release a bit more of the V8 sound but i am holding off due to potential MOT issues with removing CATS or resonators. My SL has 4 CATS so will removing 2 of them be an issue, its a popular mod but knowing my luck i get a clued up MOT tester who fails the car. What i dont understand is why dont people with aftermarket sports exhausts come unstuck as well.

No problem, i'll try and answer as best i can
It is installed after both sets of cats, i cut out the resonator and fitted this in it's place.
The gas flow is a good question, and one i'd considered myself, unfortunately I've only just done it this week and haven't been able to get out much but I haven't noticed anything as yet, of course you can always close the valve.
On a steady throttle, even with the valve open, there is no drone whats so ever, something i was also very concerned about and the main reason i went down this route and didn't just gut the back box i.e. if it did shut the valve.
Now the hard wire question, well, I did wire it into the 12V supply (cigarette lighter) last night and it stopped working so I connected the 12v plug back together and it started working again??
I haven't got to the bottom of why yet, but I will.
Hope this helps a bit

This is why I left all the cats in place, I'm hoping the resonator being removed won't be an issue. He would have to be clued up to realise it's not there in my opinion. I personally can't see it being an issue as the car is virtually the same sound as stock with the valve closed, in fact i can't tell the difference :D
