I'm thinking of getting rid of my v70 work horse and getting a big luxo barge.

Im looking at 2006-2008 model year +/-

I'll be honest I don't really know the difference, i do prefer the look of the cls.

I mainly want comfort and an auto and diesel(can someone give me economy figures).

The cars i'm browsing are the CLS and S class merc, 7 series BM, AUDI A8 and possibly the lexus LS460/600 as i've had LSs before.

I don't want anything smaller, just because:D

Pros cons and real world advice please.

I've had a 2006 cls320, Cls55 and a 2007 730d out of that lot and my experience is:

Cls all day long even in the diesel version. Gives you a real good feeling (especially having an sl you'll relate to the small windows and cocooned feeling) air suspension transforms it in my opinion.

The 730d is big and hefty but does drive really well. Wafts nicely but you can still corner fairly well in it. Plus it has a lot of toys and more space. So if toys and space are what you want a 730d is a great car.

If style and something quirky is what you're after the cls is the daddy.

Day to day the cls is easier to live with

I have been looking at very similar cars. At the moment it's a toss between the S Class 320CDI and the A8 4.2TDI. I wish MB put the 420CDI in the S.

The 7 series is bland looking inside and puts me off.

CLS is nice but I much prefer the 218 which is out of my range

Is this a daily mile muncher? If it is, don't discount the E class, particularly the 350.

After all, it's the CLS with a more comfortable and practical shell.

No its just a car. I don't commute, I either do long runs or pootle around locally.

Ive got the SL and my bikes for pleasure, but i'm a very lazy driver and like big cars.
The E class of that age does nothing for me.

It's more what I like and want as all the cars i like will surpass my needs, but real world advice is always good :D

Know this is a Mercedes forum but I'd have a good look at the A8 4.2TDI or if you're feeling lucky go for the W12.

CLS .... Ive never driven the others your looking at but I have this one and its absolutely fantastic.

Decent MPG (get the boring bit out of the way) really comfortable (Im 6'4" too) feels great to drive. Will wallow all day on M/A roads, has enough on twisty B's (don't expect SL/AMG levels but its more that enough fun). Personally it makes me feel like million $$$ driving it. I also think it looks fantastic.

If you're looking for waftability, I'd suggest a Phaeton. While it can be hustled a bit (it does share a chassis with the Bentley Flying Spur) its real strength is on the motorway.

I've driven over 700 miles in a single day without feeling tired or exhausted and the ride is still very, very good. In fact, Mercedes now use the same Continuous Damping Control on the W222 S-Class.

Yes, it's a bit boring to look at, but if you appreciate engineering the Phaeton is head-and-shoulders above most of its contemporaries.

My daily drive is an E320 (2009) on the 40 mile round trip to work/back - slow moving dual carriageway and motorway I average 33-34mpg on longer trips I can get 40-41mpg.

I have never had an s class before but multiple European jaunts meant the e55k was unsuitable on an economical front (albeit fun).

Despite being now a series older than current I am totally blown away but how much more refined it is than my 2013 e class was. Different league. Totally superior.

Really. The step up from an e class is palpable. Having had 4 or 5 e classes of various vintage I feel I can comment with some authority.

Just needed to buy a v12 petrol version....... But then I have the same mpg issues.......

Well I drive a W221 S320 and the ride and comfort is great,32 around town and 36 on long runs that is not hanging around, they are great value at the moment, the A8 is not such a great car to drive,it is very nice but the S is a much more relaxed drive.

Had a cls 350 which I adored, sold it to buy a tow vehicle (shogun). That lasted 3 months until I couldn't drive the 'truck' anymore, just in the process of buying an S350.... Soooooo looking forward to coming back
Buy the CLS or the S Class preferably...

I had E Class, S Class, A8 and a CLS 'in period' (2005 to 2011)
The A8 was good but unlovable.
The E class was functionally brilliant.
The S Class was the most relaxing form of road travel whilst driving yourself.
The CLS was only very slightly less luxurious than the S, but could be pressed into entertaining you ;) I loved it:thumb: (with Brabus engine kit!)

We have a Phaeton & an S500 W221, both offer a lovely comfortable ride on adjustable air suspension. If you use cruise control a lot the Distronic Plus on the S Class is much superior to the Phaeton system. For me it's down to the spec available on second hand cars - Our S Class has Night Vision/Ventilated seats/Anti Collision/Harmon Kardon full entertainment package with Freeview...............shame it doesn't have the massage function that our Phaeton has.
The boot is quite shallow on the Phaeton compared to the S Class.
Good luck on your search

Think i want an S class.
The phaeton I know is a great car but it doesn't float my barge.

I like the cls but some just look wrong sometimes for some reason.

Ive seen a few S's that may fit the bill, I'm only after the 350cdi(limo or not).

So is this a bad idea or workable? £8kish i'm thinking for an 06-08 year ranging from 60k-130k miles?

What options above standard are the must haves?

Have you considered a big Lexus?
