CLS320 cdi Buying advise, known issues, tips etc

How can a guy with a diesel automatic not know how to drive it ?

The biggest concern with the manifold gunge seems to be driving like a pensioner.

Steve drives his like he stole it ...... when he can.

yeah ltd i have heard of this even in connection with the dpf that atleast once a month u should drive it like you just robbed a bank and thats actually good for the car, luckily for me i like to give me a car a good spanking down the rev range at least once a week.

steve you get a fair amount of abuse on here dont u lol

is there anyway for me to buy star, i have seen some of ebay quoting to to work on all merc up to 2010 for 600 quid, i usually dont mind buying this as it allows me to do thinkgs myself and not depend on a dealer.

The problem you'll have is getting the updates for Star, Mercedes independents can struggle to keep pace with them, never mind a private individual.

Plus, for how many times you'll use it and the amount it would cost, you'd be as well just paying for it at an Indy whenever you need it plugged in.

I think the previous owner(s) have a lot to answer for, as well as MB Glasgow for not changing the manifold at the time they changed the port motor. I suspect if they had, the car would have been fine.

My car I'd like to think is well driven, certainly gets some stick so I can't believe it gets clogged manifolds but I do seem to average better MPG than most people on here with the same car.

I'm going to do donuts in the ice tomorrow, keep the manifold clean:bannana::bannana: (If I can get it to move)

this valve body issue with the gearbox is starting to annoy me. is this a common problem. how many have had it and at what age and millage

Think it's worth it for my car :ban:.

Its now gone off.....

Steve, you have a lot of patience with that car! If my CLS behaves like "the Shed" it'll last a few months with me at most!

I know the feeling. Sometimes I wonder if I should have got the Lexus GS I looked at before the CLS. It was a very nice car and probably would have been bullet proof reliable! Ah well, seduced by the looks as usual.. :D

Me too. More fool for me. I think with my car its one of the very first CDi V6's. Buy a well proven model, not a garage owners paradise.

But, on the plus side, your car is brilliant when it works!

I've decided to give mine two chances. This up coming repair and one more...after that it's hello 5 series or Lexus GS if it has any more faults! Cruel maybe, but unreliable cars drive me insane! :D

ok is there anyone out there that has an 06 07 plate cls with good news for me lol....

this is turning out to be a depressing thread haha

No!!! These are just isolated incidents! When i was looking for one I was impressed by the lack of problems generally with the CLS. Seemed to be less things reported than on 211s, but that might be 'cos there are less of them about.

CLS is a great car and I would say unless you're unlucky, you should find it a good car to own. In retrospect I should probably have gone for a petrol as my mileage is so low and the petrol engines seem more robust, but again, I think V6 diesel issues are not as common as it might appear here. :)

I have a CLS 55 ..

had it nearly 2 years and done about 16k miles.

needed a new front parktronic sensor, and oil cam cover needed resealing.

that's it.

lesson? buy the 55 :)

The 55 is truly special. I should know ;)

Barry, my car would break your spirits. Had a cracking jolly last week and felt great. Now this. Hopefully it's a one off and that the light has gone off is a good sign I think. Still drives great and gives bags of power.

I know how you feel. Took the CLS out today, rattling like a bag of bolts now, but the engine is still smooth and powerful and as long as I wear ear plugs, is still a great car! :D

Unfortunately I had to postpone the diagnostic at MB Oxford until later in the week, but it certainly sounds now like the engine is on it's way out.. :(

I've never actually heard one with this problem, is it blindingly obvious and it cannot just be "left"....

is this the engine bearing problem ?

I've never had a car with an engine problem before, so this is all new territory for me!!

yes, you'll know it if you hear it. And, since thursday it's got louder and, to make it worse, the engine is rattling generally, like a 4 pot diesel rather than the refined sound of a normal V6. Don't know what this new sound is all about, but hopefully MB Oxford will and the warranty will cover it!
Should've kept my 211..... I can honestly say my "CLS dream" is over. Shame.
