Coil Pack issue

I know, my first post on here, and I'm asking for help...

Last year I had an ignition coil replaced, and it looks like another is failing (or has already died). It has similar symptoms, but could it be something else?

My CLK 320 'shivers' on tick over, and on a couple of occasions has cut out. Is there a way of checking which one has gone, without going to the dealer? Is there a specific resistance reading?

Thanks

Not sure which engine you? have if its straight six do a search for M104 engine wiring loom, or if its v6 112, i would just get the codes read then swap the suspect coil to another cylinder and see if the fault moves with it, also worth a search as i think was covered recently on either a 240 or 320.

Thanks, I was hoping it was as simple as replacing each coil. My MB dealer charged me a total of £203.68 +vat last year, to test, replace 2 cables and a coil.
I've done searches for; ignition coil, coil pack, judder, and shudder. There are 100's of threads, almost all are unrelated.

Thats sounds like the v6 engine which has one coil pack for each cylinder and each coil pack has 2 coils in it hence the two leads, bosch ones on e bay for about £60, pic on e bay looks wrong as its the underside view of the coil pack.

203 isnt a bad price tbh, the coil packs are 141 and the leads 25 each. my first port of call would be to get a odbII scanner or star on your system to see if you have a cylinder missfire, normaly you should also be getting the Engine Check light being illuminated with this

Thanks for both replies :thumb:

I picked up a replacement coil (£63 +vat) on Thursday. I also bought a 1st cat, as mine seems to have imploded! - Having read a few more threads, this could be the underlying reason for the shudder - although it has the same symptoms as last year's coil problem. The cat is being replaced on Thursday.

My engine management light has made an appearance on a couple of occasions, although is not a permanent feature . Scanner and lead have just been ordered.

Cat was fitted on Thursday, but we decided that as the tick-over seemed healthier, it wasn't worth changing the ignition coil at the time.

On Saturday evening I went to Sainsburys, and came out to a car that wouldn't start. It turned over, but wouldn't fire up. Sometimes I could hear the fuel pump, sometimes I couldn't. I tried this for well over an hour. Eventually, I decided it was time to join AA. After being on hold for ages, tried the car one more time, and it fired up

Got home, to find the OBDII U480 had been delivered, but there was a linking error message :wallbash: It works fine on the other car, so it's either the cable, or not compatible with my car.

I'm going to call a specialist in the morning.

Anyone want to buy a Scanner?

what year is your clk? as the odbii scanner should be fine, yoy do need the ignition on to connect up though

Thanks again for the replies.

It's a 2001, well, registered 01/01/01. so it's clinging on to that with its fingernails!

Instructions were followed to the letter.

It worked fine on the Evo without the cable, so it's probably that.

I've got it booked in for an official diagnostic 2moro. So watch this space.....

(Thanks to renault12ts for the recommendation of the independent)

It needs a crankshaft sensor!

Well, I didn't see that one coming....
