Cold start and diesel smell problem

S211 E320 Estate
Hi All. I have recently bought a 2005 (55) S211 E320 CDi estate. It struggles to start up first thing in the morning, our previous S210 E320 had no such problems. The heater lamp comes on for about 3-5 seconds then I turn the key and it cranks over for about 20 seconds or more. When it fires it is very lumpy for several more seconds and it belches out tons of blue smoke, big cloud.
When switching the key to position 2 I can smell diesel, really strong smell to and this is also when it is warm / hot.
I had a look under the bonnet at the fuel lines (that I could see anyway) and got my wife to switch the ignition on and off, couldn't see any leaks anywhere but.... on the left hand bank (viewed from the drivers seat UK) right at the front there is what I believe to be the injector, it has a fuel line going to it and an electrical connector. Just to the front of the injector is a couple of low points in the head casting and the forward one of these has diesel in the bottom. I dried it with a cloth and it just returned instantly. The cloth stinks of diesel so I know it is diesel that is getting in there. This flow of fuel is with or without the ignition being switched on. I am unsure if there is a residual pressure left in the fuel rail? Otherwise where can the fuel be coming from? I think the injectors are sealed to the head with an O Ring? If so I guess that I may have found the problem, or maybe not. If the O Rings have failed would this cause A) the smell and B) the bad cold starting?
Hoping that I can get answers to this as I really want to get it all sorted out.
Many thanks in advance

Keith

Sounds like the injector leak off lines are leaking somewhere. Low spots in the casting allow the leakage to pool.

The injectors are sealed by copper washers, the failure of which causes the fabled 'black death', so it's probably not that unless it 'chuffs' too, in it's early stages.

I think you've said you've already had it in a garage in another post?
I'd not go back there if they're not able to diagnose the cause of this fairly basic-sounding cdi fault.
