Ive got a comand unit to install but the seller gave me a non mercedes aerial, has anyone used an non merc aerial does it affect the performance of the unit?
A non-MB aerial could be anything. It could be as good as the MB OEM aerial or it could be crap. In any case, the antenna installation position is more important as long as the after market part is reasonable.

Some of the aftermarket antenna's work fine, others dont work or break after a while. I recommend that you position it under the dash adjacent to the air vents looking up through the widscreen.
If you are coming to the GTG we can code the car for you then.
Edit: I see your car is a 56 plate. In which case its Comand APS and your car will almost certainly need some coding.
