I have just finished installing a comand in my W203 C Class 2005 model. Evrything works perfectly, however, when i put in my dvd nav disc, it asks me to wait and then displays "Cant read disc, please check"

Am i right in thinking it will be the disc thats the problem. I bought it on Ebay for £40, the latest version, and when i received it, i was dubious it was just a copy of an original.

I just want to make sure theres nothing wrong with the actual comand. It will play cd's no problem.

Also, do i need the disc in to ckeck whether Im getting a signal through the gps antenna. If so, is there anyway I can access a menu to check the antenna is working?

Thanks

Sounds like the disc is a copy, typical symptoms.

As per Wully it would appear that you have a disk problem.

Where are you based? I have a Sat Nav DVD Version 4 and it's original.
I could post it to you, let you try it. As long as you send it back to me.
I'm using version 6 now, but like keeping hold of the old versions.

Let me know by PM and I'll post it to you tomorrow.

Regards,

Alex.

CD's use a different read head than DVD's do. Playing a CD only proves that the CD, spindle motor and general electronics are working. The DVD head can still be a suspect.

i am getting same prob, mine just keeps saying "Reading Error " but still plays Audio Cd,can i take it that i have a copy and it won't read it, Please give me HELP i am pulling my hair out !!.

sat nav dvd

I originally had version 4 dvd and then purchased version 8 on ebay of which i made a copy both work ok. Recently i changed vehicles and the C220 estate that i now have had version 6.3 installed. I have since installed the latest version and noticed that milage and ETA appeared on the screen. Other than that both the original and copy dvd iare working fine. I must admit i did pay more than you paid and like you was dubious as this was the first time in using ebay but when received it was a genuine copy. At present the copy is in the car and original on the shelf indoors just in case someone decides to unlawfully enter.

I think that you have unfortunately fallen prey to someone who is deceitful.

Let me know how you get on and i could send you an earlier copy.

Copying those disks is illegal and something my Teleatlas account manager is interested in stopping.

Using copied disks may work for a while but in my experience I have come across a lot of comand units that start off reading copied disks but then start failing. Eventually they read just originals and then shortly afterwards they read nothing at all.

The reasons for this are very simple. Some people believe that a digital copy of a disk is just as good as the original. Its not. Like many digital storage systems, there is error checking built in. Copied disks often require many more attempts to read the data than original disks. This is apparent when it takes longer to draw the maps on the screen for instance. Using copied disks uses the laser far more often. Hence the life of the laser is reduced.

alfie, contary to popular belief,it is not illegal to make a back up copy of software that you have bought.the eu put a block on this type of digital rights management in 2004.i have and always will copy my dvd navigation software, keep the orginal in the box at home and use the copy disc in the car,ive never had any problems with error checking or data loading.

I think Alfie was referring to copying those discs for other purposes than self-use, i.e. selling them on ebay .

That is very much illegal and not something the EU would endorse or allow in any way .

How do you know that you have not had any problems with error checking?

You WILL be forcing your head unit to read more often by using a copied disk. This shortens the lifetime of the laser. I have seen numerous comand units with faulty lasers and numerous comand systems that simply refuse to read copied disks after time just before they give up altogether.

simply because i cannot tell any difference in data loading time ,between my orginal and my copy, ive tried it many times.i also feel that the lasers being used now are of a much higher quality than a few years ago,my playstation 2 has been obsolutely battered and its still going strong, its been used nearly every day,for more than the sat nav dvd unit.
i think you pays your money and takes your choice.
