Comand

"What most people don't know (MB certified or not), is that you can use a CANBUS comand as well...but then you have to add and change a bit more. You can use a newstyle dashlcluster (with the bigger LCD display) and newstyle steering wheel with multifunctional steering wheel...after adding some wires THIS WILL ALL FUNCTION.."

If installing a canbus comand in a pre comand W210 , do you have to have the modified dash cluster & steering wheel before it will work? or can these be added later. Also, Would you have the part numbers for these? My W210 is the AMG E55 so I would prefer the AMG kit to match. Car interior is two tone grey/anthrasite

cheers

nice to meet you too :)

Comand was about £700 all-in, including the dash parts, the antenna, a few cables and connectors etc. I have the bill in a box of stuff I brought back from NL, if you want I can break those prices down to exact figures...

Cheers,

No need for the bills! thanks anyway.

I think without the CANBUS items present the unit will turn off after 30 mins because it doesn't think the ignition is turned on.

You want the W210 equivalent of this:

It will end up looking like this:

a CANBUS comand will only function after the updated instrument cluster is installed...otherwise it will automatically switch off after 30 minutes.

greetingz,

How can I tell if my W210 has can bus to the existing single din travel pilot sat nav or not ? What wires / connectors do I need to look for?

any help gratefully Received

Your pre modelupdated W210 should have a NON CANBUS comand (210 820 48 89) which is what was installed back then from factory in the 210s that came with comand...BUT every 163 comand unit will function as well (the 163 comands are all non canbus) and the older 208 units are also compateable (don't have a partnumber present in my mind).

greetingz,

there you go!

thanks Koolvin

I had actually read that post but I must be getting a bit confused with all this stuff because I am sure our friend in the NL told me in a previous email that all W210 have can bus. Am I missing something here??

yep, all face lift w210's have canbus yours is pre face lift.

ok

thanks everyone for your comments and advice

I would appreciate one final response from our NL expert to my emails and to my posts of today as to why he told me all W210's have can bus when it seems only facelift and later have can bus.
perhaps he is a little irritated that I bid against him and won 2 comand units on ebay yesterday.

Steve's a cool guy and I have met him personally he is not one to hold a grudge!

Steve was the one who gave me the information on later w210's having canbus. All the advice I have been giving you is what I have learnt from Steve! :) :bannana:

Fair comment, I accept what you say. I dont know the guy.

I will send you a copy of the email Steve sent me when I get in work tomorrow. I may have simply misunderstood it.

:)

Ps anyone want to buy a canbus comand !!

I neeeeeed Comand

I just need Steve to Guinea Pig his SL and figure it all out!

I just cant see how I'm going to retro fit something that big as I have conventional heater controls! - and I dont have either the finances or know-how to retrofit the later system!

Does anyone know what the two vertical slots are at the extreme right & left of the row of switches???

I just ordered a wood facia panel & when I asked the guy in parts - bless him he didnt know!

Gud info there...:)

CanBUS COMAND systems can be used in non-can bus cars. I have a can bus COMAND in my ML.

There is a peice of software called 'freediag' that was used to tell my w210 COMAND that it was in an ML, thus enabling the auto light feature (switches COMAND lights on when it gets dark), and disabling the 30min time off period.

However, if you can get hold of a MY2000 COMAND (without the alpha numeric keypad) these will work in a ML without reprogramming. (auto lights will not work though).

sourceforge.net

Hope this helps!

So.... If I fit the lastest Comand unit part no A163 820 36 89 specifically made fo rthe ML and fit this my 2001 ML (MY2002) I presume then that this will work without any mods, ie auto lights work, etc as though it was a factory fit unit.??

... and then if I use a Can Bus Comand for the W210 in my W210 that does not have can bus to the radio, are you saying that the software you mentioned can be used to disable the auto switch off feature in this case also without any other mods??

Thanks for all input - I continue to be a little owerawed by the seemingly unlimited number of scenarios with comand units.:bannana:

The 36 89 COMAND for your ML will work fine without any reprogramming. You may however have to 'patch' across the correct speed sensor wire as this seems to be different on some early COMAND units.

FreeDiag needs to be downloaded and then installed onto a linux pc. You then need to run a serial lead from you PC to the diag plug on your vehicle, the star diagnostic plug that is. It's not that easy to do, however instructions are avilable.

This would allow you to modify the settings in the COMAND unit, and disable things like TV tuner switch off (whilst moving) and other settings (like can bus component arrangement)

Cheers, Matt.

but its a special serial lead is it not... serial for the laptop but a special connector car related ... these are expensive and not easy to make afaik.

It is a special serial lead. The parts cost about £60 and the pin outs can be found on the web.

Suppliers and pin outs are also included with the freediag toolkit.
