COMAND update shock.

Just been in touch with my local dealership to ask about the latest Satnav update disk for the SL - I'm currently on 4.0 or 4.1 I think. To my amazement they told me that they have V8 in stock and it's only £117+VAT - not the £255 that I was expecting. Next shock was that the service dept want to charge me £50 to 'flash' the DVD to bring the firmware up to date - this sounds a bit rough when I'd be purchasing a new disk from them anyway. I know there have been lots of threads on updates, but do you think the £50 is a rip off even though the disk is much cheaper than I was expecting. As I'm only really interested in an updated map, do I need the firmware upgrade too.
Thanks, Matt

You probably dont need to have the update applied. V8 seems to work fine in cars without the update . I installed one this morning for a customer and we didnt need the update.

Why dont you buy the disk and see if it works? If not, come to the GTG on sunday and you can borrow my update disk:)

Alfie,

Thats very kind of you and nice to know. Having read a number of threads about disks etc, it seems that the DVD will try and load any new firmware once it's inserted, but you know what the dealerships are like about making sure - and charging for it. They indicated that because of the number of updates I'd be skipping it wouldn't work.

We are going to try and come over for the GTG so I may take you up on that kind offer. Looking froward to meeting you all there on Sunday.

Regards, Matt

The car I did this morning was V4 and it went straight to V8 no problem. Me thinks dealer is wanting to make some money.......

You're a star! I think you're right about the Dealer. If they wanted to be smart they could have done any update on a goodwill basis and gained some loyalty - instead they just P everyone off.

I'll buy the disk and take a chance at £117.

See you on Sunday, and thanks again. Matt
