Hi all,

I am a bit confused abuot tyre load ratings for a CL55.

The spec for the car says it needs:

245/40R19 Z 98 front
275/35R19 Y 99 rear

Lots of people recommned Falken 452 as a good value/performance tyre for this car but they are only available in

245/40R19 Y 98 front
275/35R19 Y 96 rear

i.e. the rear has a lower tyre load rating of 96 compared to the recommended 99. This equates to 710kg compared to the recommended 775kg.

Does this matter, I assume it does in which case why are the Falkens recommended?

Interestingly another recommendation of the Dunlops seem to be in the same boat.

I am confused.

If it were me I'd not reduce load or speed rating, which will narrow you down to Dunlop/Mich./Yoko/Pirelli or Yoko. Kumho may do 100 load if your on a budget.

Thanks for the reply and that is kind of how I feel too. If it were meant to be less than 99 it wouldn't be specified at 99 would it!

Its a guide figure, just because its lower doesnt mean that the car will fall through into Australia.

I have seen CL's on much worse tyres than those!

However the CL is a big heavy car and you will have everyone on here telling you that there is only one thing between you and the road... using the incorrect tyres will lead to instant death.

Now roll on the winter tyre questions...

LOL, I wouldn't mind falling through to Aus - quite fancy some sunshine :D

While I see what you're saying the rating between them is quite different 710kg vs 775kg, that is not far off 10% difference. While I know it won't lead to 'instant death' ;) surely it could have an effect on the handling/behaviour of the tyre when pushing on?

The Falken ZE912 is a better tyre in my opinion, does not have the noisy V type tread of the 452. I think the 912 is about to be replaced by the 914, have you looked at any of them? After trying the Falkens, I don't bother looking at the expensive names any more.

if you are on a budget, I would buy part worns from ebay.

You can quite often get tyres with 7-8mm tread for half price... just buy from one of the bigger used tyre sellers..

Don't think the ZE912 is available in the sizes I require (see first post in thread).

It's not so much that I amon a budget just that I had seen a lot of good things said about the 452s on a CL.

The 710kg will have softer sidewall's, as would a lower speed rating, so yes this could change handling behavior, however, if you compare a Michelin to a Yoko both been rated 98Y, the Mich will have softer sidewall's to provide the comfort ride whist the Yoko stiffer to proved the sportier feel.

If your happy with the brand you have at present, might be best to stick with them, as you know what to expect from them & you can obtain the same tread pattern for both front/rear. .

Two years ago my CL 55 AMG came with the Falken 452's fitted fore and aft - felt the tyres were good, but as they wore I replaced them with the Vredestein Sessantas.
The Sessantas over the last ten months have been very good, plenty of grip in all conditions and as to road noise, I've never really noticed.
Have a look for them at Camskills:
Vredestein Tyres / Car / Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta - 245/40R19 98Y XL TL £214.50 Car Tyres - MPV Tyres - People Carrier Tyres - 19" R19" - 245/40/19, 245/40R19_
Vredestein Tyres / Car / Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta - 275/35R19 100Y XL TL £268.00 Car Tyres - MPV Tyres - People Carrier Tyres - 19" R19" - 275/35/19, 275/35R19_

£215 a front and £268 a rear.

Hope that helps a bit, oh, they look good as well!

Thanks for the replies.

In have had 452s on the car since I bought it, but just noticed the load rating when looking at replacements.

Think I will go for something else like the Vredesteins above as would rather spend a bit extra and have the correct ratings.

Michelin Pilot Super Sports.

Hopefully it will never come to it but if you are ever involved in an accident, your insurers will try everything to avoid paying out, or at least recovering their payments from you. If MB specify XYZ spec tyres and they find your car has UVWs instead, that'll do nicely.
