Convertible cars with the roofs up rant !!!

is that a folding camper i spot there...? another caravanner eh

yeah its a french folding caravan, i used it for car shows rather than camping cos my back is ruined, as my lot often convoy to these events i needed something i could tow at "hurumphty" mph to keep up with them in Cosworths and hotrods etc, even the plastic jeep with a big V8 in it had trouble maintaining high speeds with a 'van on the back but the folding one didnt slow it down at all because its so low, its nice and wide though so tows straight and stable even at 3 figure speeds (private road officer) :D

Here it is in its erect  state

Best reason I heard was "it's too hot"!!

I once hired a Mustang convertible in Aus (I wanted the muscle, she wanted the cabrio).

It wa bloody useless in Aus - FAR too hot. Couldn't take the roof down till after the sun had gone down. Plus I couldn't drive fast becuse of insane policing. Plus it couldn't go round corners as it was (a) American and (b) as rigid as watery jelly.

Not one of my better purchases.

Slightly off topic but Im experimenting with a throat microphone for my Nokia to use when the roofs down, if it works for ski-ers it should work for convertibles, problem is a walkie talkie mic doesnt make a straight connection to a mobile phone so we are "experimenting" lol

Dad-in-law has the Megane CC - I quite like it but can't bring myself to own another French car!!! Always enjoyed my German cars......

i think i may be to blame for the loss of your car.

the car i ordered with swindon merc didnt have the black wood in it so they took there black demonstrator and swaped the wood into my new car and put the metal into the demonstrator. how was the condition of the wood trim as i think it had 8000 miles on it. i am picking it up on sat for worned is for armed if its marked. cheers jon

The demo car we had did have the black maple interior which I think looks very classy! We took it with 740 miles on the clock and gave it back 10 days later with almost 1500! Very enjoyable to drive and roof down whenever we could.

Mines down as often as possible, got caught out today travelling from Kenilworth back to Leek on the M6 Toll when glorious sunshine turned to a torrent in about 400 yards!
Luckily the toll road was as deserted as ever and I swiftly parked under a bridge and got the roof up -I know I shouldn't but what the heck....

I must have been looking at another car on the net then. With that little mileage the trim should be unmarked and by now hopefully in my car. :bannana:

Dont have too tell me twice to get my top off....

Clk 500 convertible....hood down at any opportunity.....with wind deflector in place there is hardly any wind disturbance even at motorway speeds so no excuse to keep top up!!

My second car was an old Triumph Vitesse Convertible when I was 19, the roof was down more often than not.

The new CLK has had the roof down most of the time too, even at 3am on the drive to work!

My memories of Triumph Vitesses are that it did not make much difference whether the hood was up or down....
I used to own a Lotus Elan M100.....that used to leak like a sieve with hood up (the windscreen seals were notorious for failing). My Alfa spider roof leaked, but that was knackered. My old MGB hood was ok but took an age to erect as it had a frame a bit like a tent. Had no problems with the hood on the Golf or the Fiat Barchetta. Had 2 CLK convertibles....best hood ever up or down!!

Had an old Mk 2 Sprite, used to drive around with no hood on all the time. Just unzip the tonau cover on the drivers side and put the heater on full and all was well. didn't matter if it was snowing or what, you only got a little damp when you had to stop!!
No electric tops in those days.

Nothing better than the roof down. Sadly for me, the amount of time I've had to have it up reminds me what a wet and miserable year its been in Cumbria:doh:

I'm optimistic, though...

I understand....was in Lakes last week.....only managed to get hood down on two occasions!! On drive up and down boot too full to take hood down (dog on back seat!)

You can always tell a hardcore convertible user if they're travelling on the motorway with the roof down, not many of them about.

Of course, roof up driving provides greater fuel efficiency, which may be many peoples excuse. I prefer to use the wind stop, which works incredibly well, even at motorway speeds :)

Just got back home and have added another 3-series to my list of cars to confiscate for driving on days like these with the roof up:doh:

And don't think I won't do it - I'm just waiting on Vodafone to make good their offer for me to rule the world:devil:

OK i've been driving around for the past month or so on sunny days with the roof down on my SL.

on almost every occasion, 90% of the convertable cars i've seen at that time had the roof up. I cant understand it.

i've also now decided to take the SL on any day that looks like there isnt rain and the sun is shining. i drove back from yorkshire to scotland all the way with the roof down at 80mph, even when it started to get a little chillier into the evening - i just put the heater on.

need to invest in a baseball cap though to keep my face getting sunburnt lol. i almost bought a Merc club one at the SL rally and wish i did now

great fun!!
