Probably been asked a million times,
E270cdi 53 plate auto

Is it 5w40 fully synthetic? and cheapest place to buy and I will need to buy 2 5 litre tubs I assume.

TIA

What does it say in the manual re oil type and amount needed?

It is not recommended to buy oil for MB cars simply based on it beeing full synthetic and of certain viscosity.

Instead, the oil for MB cars is specified according to MB Spec Sheet, e.g. 229.3, 229.51, etc.

You need to find which MB Spec Sheet is required for your engine type and then buy oil that says either 'Approved to...' or 'Meets or exceeds..' the relevant MB Spec Sheet.

That is very misleading advice.
Oil that is "Approved" gains that approval because the oil manufacturer pays for the accreditation based on the specification they supply.

Sometimes a lower quality oil is the approved one over a higher quality one. Guess which one then costs more?

Made by Mobil 1. I read this tip from olly at PCs and have since found out that lots of garages/mechanics know about this cheap way to get top quality oil.

Meets or exceeds the spec for nearly all MB.

I've just ordered 2 cases of this from Vauxhall Trade Club working out at £2.97 per litre. It's made by Fuchs in the UK not Mobil as I would never put Mobil 1 any where near my engines. Previously used Shell Helix but everyone swears by this GM stuff so time to give it a go

I must have got my wires crossed somewhere. Got any sources I can read about that oil? I got some for the Mrs. Car. Will be doing the service next week.
How much oil in 2 cases?

What's so bad about Mobil 1?

Correct, and I did say:

.... in the previous post.

Unlike 'Approved', 'Meets or exceeds' does not involve paying anything to MB.

Both options are there for the consumer to choose from.

You will find that all oils that say it meets or exceeds a certain manufacturers spec, have a fee paid to the manufacturer. They won't endorse it otherwise.

OK.

So the car owner's choise is between these three options:

1. Approved to... meaning MB have tested it, and it's OK from their point of view.

2. Meets or exceeds... meaning MB did not actually test it, but it should be OK.

3. No mention of MB, meaning MB have no view on it, but it might be OK.

Sounds reasonable.

Asda selling castrol magnatec 5w/30c3 for £20 which is damn cheap.
Should be suitable for e270cdi as it meets 229.31
How much oil will it need? Will two 8 litre tubs leave me a little for top up purposes

I wouldn't put that oil into a reliant robin let alone a merc.

I used it once in a audi a6, the engine sounded like a bag of spanners. Never again !

Is it that bad, it's one below the best quality that castrol do which is the edge.
Surely worth it for £20 a tub no?

Castrol spend all their money on advertising instead of the oil itself :p which is why everyone remembers liquid engineering, magnatec etc yet still buy something else

I don't do properly modern stuff but AIUI mb229.51 is the 'long life' version of 229.31 so...

Petronas Syntium 5000 XS 5w30 4ltr
or
Oils and Additives Fuchs Titan GT1 Pro Flex 5W30 Engine Oil - 5 Litre - F5W305L | incarmotorfactors.co.uk

Note the Fuchs in the second link comes in 5 litres containers so it's barely any more £/litre and under a fiver/litre if you buy a 20L tub. These oils aren't 'artificially' expensive because they don't have to recoup the costs of huge advertising campaigns (plus the perceived brand quality thing) like Castrol and Mobil
Wave those prices at Opie oils and they say they'll beat them (don't think they stock Petronas though?). Whether that's a delivered price or not i don't know and can't remember how much you have to spend at Opie to get 'free' delivery but Incar factors and carparts4less prices are both all in, delivered to your door

no idea how much you need, 7.5 litres was mentioned earlier and is probably right. Assuming your cars handbook doesn't really say 'ask on a forum' it'll be listed in there along with with various other useful bits and pieces :D

Spend money on your oil, don't go for cheap rubbish.

Love your engine, and it will love you back.

I'm running my E280 V6 642 on that Petronas Syntium stuff and my car has never sounded sweeter. Done 4k since last service and car sounds brand new. I wreckon it's better than that Mobil stuff too as my Mpg is around 40 and that A road driving mostly!
