Money 'saving'? Question

my lass is home working for the foreseeable future and has suggested chopping my '98 C280 and her '04 A140 in for something we can share - she has seen a '56 c180K that she says looks nice[and it does ............ but it's only a 2L] -
  • not sure its quite powerful enough????
  • and
  • whether after moderate grunt in mine, will I take to it???
  • I will be at work all day - so would like something cheap [to buy and run, on insurance and tax] and not geeky and fun??? Just in case she needs to pop out/get kids etc etc and for me to use when she's got the 'family' car
  • classic maybe??? Had Chevettes in the [distant] past!!!, but not sure if SWMBO would like them[not been driving long, she's only ever owned an A140] anything else worth considering with classic insurance status that fits the bill???
  • I've even looked at CL's[my dream car] for the 'family' car but think they are still too dear,YET!
Your esteemed thoughts please

Drive the C180k you might be suprised. the late kompressor engines go pretty well and aren't too bad on fuel. BTW a 56 C180k isn't a 2.0 litre carried forward from the w202 it is a 1.8 supercharged engine with at least 143bhp.

so the smaller engines I could cope with.

What about the cheap/classic/funky/fun occasional vehicle???

Looked today[autotrader only] at the [very] cheap end of the coupe market - mr2's, celicas for under a grand?

MGB for the classic? Fun to drive, fine if they're not an everyday car (though plenty do get used everyday), mechanics are a doddle, oodles of spares available, zero depreciation and can be old enough to have zero road fund license as well.

If going to end up keeping two cars why not stick with the devils you know and avoid the selling and buying costs -and the hassle.

I can see the logic in that - but mines done 140k and is rusting away and SWMBO has outgrown hers - the 1.4 is more than a bit gutless - it was what she wanted 4years ago as an incentive to pass her test.

Fair enough. Good case to change. What's the budget for the main car? Full galvanising of all steel panels is on cars with 2003 build date onwards.

I would recommend at least a C200K for a bit of poke without losing much in economy or emissions.

The V6 in your car is a very different engine. You may find the 180K harsh in comparison and a little bit weedy.

The best thing to do it is to test drive one. You may find it ok and suitable for your needs.
