Have got the A4 Cab in for a quick warranty job at the local Audi dealer (who in all honesty have been great so far :) ). When car originally went in for 'diagnosis' they supplied a perfectly nice '05' A6 Saloon for the duration (PM night before - PM the next day, suits my needs.)

This time in order to complete the job (they needed to order a part) I arrived back at the dealer to have the part fitted. As I saw them filling in the paperwork briefly for the loan vehicle, I noticed that it was going to be an A3, which left me at first feeling slightly dissapointed, especially when he asked if I was ok with an Auto (visions of underpowered small 'orrible low spec cheapie came to mind) :(

I've got to say that it was a pleasant surprise, it's a A3 2.0T FSI Sport, with the DSG gearbox. All I can I say is what an incredible gearbox! In automatic mode it drives very smoothly and civilised as it shifts sensibly through the six ratios, pop it into sports mode and it's an absolute blast. A very eager 200bhp (don't forget that there's not much weight to this thing! ;) ) with an exceptionally quick gear change (something like 0.2 of a second so I am told  ). It isn't even remotely like a conventional auto 'sport' mode, it physically refuses to change up a gear until it's really boiling, and as you bring it to a rapid halt, it shifts down through the box as quickly as you could hope for in a manual, giving exceptional braking.

This DSG 'box should satisfy even the most stubborn of 'auto haters' (getting you back for that hairdressing comment Graham :D :p :p). AFAIK it has no 'power sapping' torque converter, has two clutches (so it can pre-engage the next gear), can change gear in 0.2 of a second and is quicker than the equivalent manual.

Ok so it's no sports car, but I was impressed to hear that it's within 0.5 of a second of the 3.2 quattro DSG varient in a 0-60 dash, coming in at 6.9 seconds (vs. 6.4 for the 3.2 or 6.5 for a 3.2 manual ;) ).

Tip function is also fun, but in my opinion, the sport mode auto is so good that you would be unlikely to use this much.

All in all it's a nice car, good spec (sport pack, leather, heated seats, Bose etc etc), but it's still an A3. It's very quick and capable, but I can't work out if the 'anonymity' factor is good or not. You could certainly surprise many people with it's performance, especially being that it's 'only a 2.0T FSI', but I can't help feeling that it blends into a whole image of company cars and has no real identity.

Anyway, not an MB and obviously nothing that exciting for most of you, but I must say that it rapidly changed my opinion of the otherwise 'boring' A3! Certainly better than it could have been (even though it is a bit small! :o )

Did it stall while you where driving it?
There seems to be a lot of scepticism about the DSG 'box long term reliability.

However, your write up does show what a good idea it is to give customers decent courtesy cars - VAG have gained valuable publicity FOC.

Hi Rory,

No, it didn't stall on me at all, and drives faultlessly (I suppose it should do being four weeks old with 700 miles on it!).

Can't comment on the reliability aspect, although IMO I expect we'll be seeing more of these gearboxes i the future?

Regarding publicity, you are probably right. I wouldn't have taken the time to mention my thoughts on this car if it were a 1.6 manual or something ;) :o

Cheers,

Will

Sounds very nice and you were clearly impressed.

Warranty work!!!! I thought it was only Mercedes-Benz that were unreliable? :D

Pleased to hear that you are pleased with the new car.

Hi John,

Yes I must say that I am disappointed to be having to visit the dealer so soon, but on the bright side I've had some fun driving this A3! ;) :D

BTW, the 'fault' that it is in for seems to be a poor gearshift (manual 1.8T A4). Don't know if this is a typical fault or not really, just hope they sort it out!

In all honesty, I think as per MB dealers, some seem good and some seem bad. This particular dealer seems great so far. :)

Cheers,

Will

Unlike MB stealers, did Audi have the audacity to ask you to pay for your courtesy car?

My MB stealer tried to to that and I went beserk: it was too much after they had tried 3 previous times to fix the same fault.

How tight can you get? Where is the 'customer service'? Is money all they want? Have they heard of 'repeat business'?

I've never had to pay for a courtesy car from MB, don't tar them all with the same brush!

Unlike MB stealers,

I have never generalised and think it unfair when this happens. I am not aware of the history between yourself and your local dealer, but please read posts by countless members from all over the country who have been treated in exactly the same manner as Will!

We can all speculate as to why some customers get treated worse than others. It clearly happens, but it shouldn't.

Hi ddentrec,

No - courtesy cas was supplied fully fuelled, and insured at no cost to me.

I am impressed with their willingness to help, although I must confess that I'll be heading back to them - again - the fault is still not fixed :( :(

Not all MB dealers are bad, and I expect not all Audi dealers are good. Some people have had problems with brand new MBs, I've had a problem with a brand new Audi.

Such is life!

The go to Mercedes Benz of Cambridge: £12.50 per day with a £1000 excess, mileage limitation. And that gets you as base model 2002 A-Class: not good if you have 3 kids. And a dog. But the customer reception area is filthy: more like a 1970's British Leyland outfit.

Mercedes Benz of King's Lynn: £10.50 per day with a £1000 excess, mileage limitation.

So I now go to Mercedes Benz of Bedford (Sytner group): free car, and its a decent 2005 E-Class estate.

I just had the W203 serviced at MB Uxbridge (as it is very close to my office) and I was given a ’05 C200K Avantgarde as a courtesy car. No charge for the loaner car.
When booking the car in I noticed “Recall ####” on the job sheet. The service manager said it was an “update” rather than a recall  , and explained that wax sealant was to be injected into the doors!
Looks like they are finally doing something preventative for the rust problems.

I have had the same problems (and others) at Peterborough (same group I think). Not only did they want to charge me for a courtesy car, they refused to deliver it, this was when my SLK had to go back to them following a fault that appeared after they had done a warranty repair. I complained to MBHQ. Peterborough, eventually, backed down.
I have experienced pretty good service over the years from MB dealers in Bath, Worcester, Gloucester, Northampton, Milton Keynes and Chiswick. Some has been good and some quite excellent. Generally I think service levels have declined since "the great dealer shake-up" The current sevice level I experience I can only describe as truly extraordinary. Like you I shall be taking the ML to Northampton, Bedford or MK for servicing

Been there, done that a MB Cambridge!

Fault: CD kept making loud clicking noises, CD display would be blank, and then player would turn itself off. Then it would skip CD tracks, or not play CDs at all.

MB Cambridge Diagnosis: 'It is the rear bonded screen causing radio interference-3 day job and a new rear screen'. I say 'I don't use the radio-its the CD player at fault!'. They say : 'It is the rear bonded screen causing radio interference'....like robots.

After 3 wasted visits they at last changed the CD player and all was well.

Do you have any more info on that, pls? How old is your car - I wonder if this is something that's been done in the factory from a certain date?

I don't know what the recall number is, but my car was registered in November 2001.

that is basically the new Golf GTI in an A3 body. I tested one a couple of months back and like you I was mighty impressed with the gearbox alsthough I would have liked it on a more powerful car. Not so impressed with the £1200 option price and no discount whatsoever. VW also has the cheek to charge extra for the steering wheel mounted gearchange controls on top!

I had yesterday looked into the possibility of the new Golf Mark 5 GTI as a possible temporary run around until I decide on a long term replacement for my W203 and have the finances to make the purchase. They are quite pricey and were not offering much of a discuount at all. Once i had speced the car up to a decent spec with xenons/command/PTS/17"alloys/rain sensing wipers (with a package option) etc. the price came to £25600.... I was like "no thank you..." when salesman offered only £400 discount - there was a used black GTI with 4000 (ish) miles sitting on forecourt and they were only selling it for around 400 (ish) less than a brand new car of equivlent spec... new Golf is a nice car but well over priced....

it is well overpriced and the first purchasers will probably get a big shock when it comes to trade-in time in 2-3yrs time.

Rediculous money... I tried hard not to laugh at the salesman - there was a nice Phantom on a 53 plate up for £23000. I may just end up getting a used M3 coupe 2/3 yrs old as a temporary run round for that sort of money/or even less... and keep it for a few months (not sure yet..) and depreciation should not be too bad.

E46 M5s are dropping to the £20k mark now. Much prefer that to an M3.
