So MB decided that they would repair 70% of the wife's car and we'd have to fork out for the remainder.

I asked if we could have a car whilst hers is away. (Probably be a week)

He had to check and said he'd phone me back. They have agreed, but we have to insure it...?

I can't say that I am overly impressed.

Where would I go to get this sort of cover? Any recommendations?

I haven't contacted our insurance provider yet as I am unsure whether this is the best route.

Any pointers would be helpful.

Cheers,

Blondebier

I have just renewed my insurance and on the policy document it states that I ma insured to drive any car loan or hired to me by a garage, it is bold and clear on the front page.
Perhaps insurers got bored of updating policys everytime someone went to the garage?

Mine too.....

That's not bad actually, my local dealer charge £20 a day for insurance which my policy already covers me for.

Thanks Guys. I'll check the policy when I get home. Fingers crossed it'll cover it.

Does that give you full comprehensive cover ( assuming that's what you have) or just basic 3rd party cover? Great to have if it does.

That's just a scam to cover the cost of the car. Normally they say it's an excess waiver otherwise there's a £1000 excess.

As others have said, my policy (with Liverpool Victoria) covers courtesy cars anyway.

I guessed it was, particularly as they let me off last time.

Phone your present insurers and ask them to transfer cover to the loan car for the duration. There may be a small admin fee, but nothing else.

This is fairly normal. Contact your insurer and depending on them and your policy this may be free or involve an admin charge.

Hi,
When my C43 went to the dealers for a service I to had to pay the insurance for the courtesy car (brand new 204, C350), through the dealers it was £10 per day, are you sure they,ll let you provide your own insurance? as the impression I got was if you want the use of our courtesy car, the insurance would have to come from them, though this could be wrong as I never questioned it as after all I was only gonna be without my car for only 1 day, so I was,nt to concerned as it was only a tenner.

That's the impression I got. He wasn't sure what car it would be and said that he would call me the day before so that I could sort out the insurance before taking the car down there.

It's a bit of a pain in the backside, but I would've thought that it would be part of the "Goodwill" as the tin worm started to attack the car after 5 years. And as we're forking out the best part of £400 I would've thought it would have been a no brainer for them to include a free courtesy car.

How times have changed. :(

There was something in the motoring press earlier this year commenting on the amount of insurance companies who no longer cover you for any other cars. It can only be a cost cutting exercise, my last two insurers, Elephant & Admiral only cover the car which the policy is taken out on, for courtesy cars I had to have them temporarily added to the policy each time, at a cost of £15 to £20

Thanks Russ, that sounds about right.

I'm with Direct Line and I think our policy does cover us to drive other cars, but only on a 3rd party basis... I'll need to read the small print carefully tonight.

Dealing with a courtesy car is treated differently by many insurers. They will transfer your full insurance to the courtesy car subject to the insurance group / value being no greater than your own car.

Phone them.

Never been charged extra for insurance on a loan car before, must differ from dealer to dealer I presume.

Directline won't charge you for temporary cover on another car - as long as you've not exceeded your allowance - something like 90 days in a policy year. No admin fee even.

In my experience, courtesy cars for for service departments are usually insured for customer use, but bodyshop cars are not (often because the bodyshop is a subcontractor, rather than the dealer themselves). May not even be an MB courtesy car!!
