We had a crack appear on the inside edge of one the rear wheels which we had welded. All seemed fine for about 4000 miles.

After a new tyre we found it was losing about 10 psi in a day so I popped the wheel off to have a look and there is a new crack about an inch long next to welded repair.

So ... deffo new wheel time - £330 inc vat from Merc, not as bad as I thought but ... not in stock.

I've had the wheel the on back order for two months - apparently a batch is being made at the factory in Poland, but the due date keeps getting shifted.

We are running round on the spare space saver wheel so not at all ideal.

We've had the car from new - 162,000 miles to date and can't see us wanting to get rid of it any time soon so I'm now considering buying a set of four matching other wheels as when the car was new I 'think' there were options on the wheels you could order. I think there was a 5 spoke wheel - the ones on our car are the ten spoke style.

Does anyone know if there is any way of finding out what other Merc wheels would fit the car?

Cheers Mate -

I've decided to buy one good second hand one as I'm about to fit my winter tyres then treat the car to shiny new set in the spring to hold the summer tyres.

Any reason for not having the wheel repaired, or is the crack that bad? I had a cracked alloy repaired about 2 1/2 years ago and I am still using it with no problems, I have also since had new tyres fitted, 2nd set since the crack repair.

The new crack is about an inch long next to welded repair. I took it back to the wheel repair guy and he said he wouldn't weld it again.

As a welder I see no reason why the wheel cannot be repaired again within reason. A friend of mine repairs them on a regular basis. The crack should be drilled at each end to prevent further propagation and the correct filler wire used to suit the alloy.Interestingly it is my friends experience that wheels only crack on the inside of the rim. I will ask him which filler wire he uses. I believe he charges around £25.
