I think my cylinder head gasket has gone - on checking - hence taking the whole engine (practically) apart. I have tried very hard to part the block and head - but it will not budge at all. What would anyone of you suggest to part this, without doing any more damage than neccessary. I read somewhere on this site that it takes approx 10 hours and £69 to change the head gasket............up to press its taken a month!

is your engine a straight 6 ? if so try looking under the inlet manifold, there is a strut under there that is secured to the head.

And Vodka is wrong too. Should be a 15 yr old malt scottish wine :D

I suggested the 10 hours and 69 quid. I was wrong.

Its cost me about 50 quid in parts and took on average 20 hours of my labour each time, but I failed twice. Then gave up on it and sold the car for 500 quid, seeing as its pointing at a warped cylinder head.

Have you followed the haynes manual tips? Holding the head down are the 14 head bolts, assorted bolts on both manifolds, autobox dipstick bolt, and camchan tensioner guide pin. It may also be a little hard to remove, I gradually jacked mine up with a crane and the gasket was quite well stuck on to both surfaces the first time.

....your right vodka is wrong ......we have a terrible head this morning!
Tried all you suggest - do you have the telephone number of whom bought your car for £500 - cos mines gonna go cheaper at this rate!

Assuming all the fixings are indeed undone then try somehow engaging a couple of bars to the head and levering the head down on one side. This will cause the head to lift the other side, thus breaking the gasket seal.

Does that make sense???

I'd always get the head skimmed before putting it back on as it only costs about £30-40 at any good engineering shop. It will save you having to take it back off when you find it needs skimming later on ;)
