Gents,

On my W124 500E I've recently started to have the fuel needle dancing quite dramatically.

It's ok from full down to 1/2 & from 1/4 & below but between 1/2 & 1/4 the needle is up and down in quite quick movements.

Is this the fuel sender or something more sinister.

Cheers D

Dont know if yours is like mine .But you need to remove the sender tube from the tank and clean it .The might be a post on here about doing just that I will look for you

Dale can you put this in google search - 230E W124 Fuel Gauge Issue and it should be the same as your problem , but read it and check yours the same way. Thats if the sender unit is the same idea ,as yourcar has a larger engine and might be anothertype of tank sender

speedo

Also this part inside the speedo can be a problem, and can give the wrong reading .Dont know how to get the part but it can be cleaned .I would look at the sender in the tank first .If its still the same after cleaning then its this part in the speedo .. Pull the wire of the tank sender see f it drops to empty with the key on.

Mark ,no its not the same .It is all in a tube ,and inside the tube is this part that goes up and down on 1 steel rods it gets sticky on the rod and needs cleaning .Reading that some have filled up the tank , and then put redx in .

sender

This is what to do .Remove the sender from the tank .It sits in the tank ,and to find it remove the back carpet trim to find tank at the back of it .Pull the plug Screw out the large nut .Lift out the sender its in a tube . Job is to clean the shaft ,but mind the wires so take a good look at it before you start .See pics

Thanks for all the Effort .... I'll look at the sender first as you suggest .... which part do I clean once I get the bottom off ... does something slide out of the outer tune?
