I would guess at 530i or a 525d looking at the speed vs distance and time.

Very close, 525i LCI with the 3.0 petrol engine.
I was pretty chuffed to get nearly 40mpg from it this week, a personal best.

I did think it would be the latest 3 litre straight six engine, or it would be the older 525d.
I had the 330i auto for 2 days, I did 500 miles on one tank and returned 39mpg in it, extremely impressive bit of kit.

A few more miles on the BM now and begining to learn how to get the best out of it.
Below is just a short journey, but it will do over 50mpg from a cold start in heavy traffic in London.

Thanks for the updates. I've got mine on order now - 520dSE auto Touring, also with professional nav and one or two other bits and pieces - though probably not quite as highly specced as yours, MacTech. Should be with me early-mid December. For my current driving (180 miles round trip to work about 3-4 times a week, nearly all of it derestricted dual carriageway or motorway) the BM should be just about ideal. Certainly looking forward to a step up in economy!

Ah, but that's on a BMW trip computer, which always seem to be 20% optimistic.
Also, has this car been chipped, which will fool the computer?

The car is completly standard, and becase the gearbox is so responsive, I feel no desire to get the ECU reprogrammed.
You are quite right about the fuel computer being slightly optimistic. 4.7% over the last couple of tank full to tank full checks. The V6 CDI Mercs would normally be within 1 to 2%
However the car is still doing well over 800 miles before needing £90 worth of fuel. I've never got that far in the ML and then it costs a card bending £140
